How about Ruan in VA are they the same way and what about orientation anybody know?
-
countrycuz they have a terminal in Chester VA I am thinking of going with them to, seams like you could get paid there as apposed to some of these crooked new age managed companies.

I worked for Ruan a number of years ago, doing shuttle/shagger duties, but quit due to a bad terminal manager. The guy wasn't flexible for anything.
Kid is sick? Tough, you better be here.
Your wife just had a miscarriage?? Wow, that's too bad. So...you'll be here for your shift, right? No?? Well, it's unexcused, so no pay.
Your brother, you haven't seen in a year and a half, just got back from the war in Iraq?? No, I won't excuse you to go to his welcome home ceremony.
The guy made life unbearable for a lot of the guys, like me, that had been there over a year and were making the better money. In the end, he forced out 10 of us.
I quit with out notice. Does anyone know what Ruan's policy is over that. -
The steel processing center I work for is turning over its shipping duties to Ruan. The drivers have the option to transfer to Ruan and do the same day-haul routes we were doing before, or we can stay with our current company and work in the shop.
There are pros and cons to each. I like driving and would like to continue. If I go back into the shop I'll take a big pay cut, but I'll work about 20 hours less a week. I've got two kids under three and that's time I could be spending with them. Who can put a price on that?
On the other hand, I haven't heard a whole lot of bad talk about Ruan except from a couple of drivers that were fired for cause, so I can't take them too seriously. They've got a good safety rating, and seem pretty solid all around. I'm hoping they will be able to solve some of the problems that I currently deal with.
I'm probably going to make the switch and go with Ruan, but I haven't quite made up my mind. Anyone else have some information that would help me make up my mind? I'd especially like to hear from a driver that has gone through a similar transition. -
I worked for ruan under the marmon account in Chicago , and it was great ( I first worked for them under the VWR scientific unit then Marmon- Keystone ), they first used me thru a temp service then bought my contract with them out , My manager at Marmon was cool and he worked with the drivers on everything ( we where union ) and I was basically a filler ( worked for sick drivers and did some long haul shuttles to the new warehouse they oppened up in Souix falls S.D. , and then he found me a regular linhaul run , then the recession hit , and they where going to lay me off as my linhaul run went up for bid and I lost it ( expected as it was a nice straight 8 hour day plus some OT if they needed a local shuttle) my manager told me to take the layoff ,as it was gauranteed unemployment , but being the idiot I was I told him I rather work and asked to be reassigned to another manager who was a ###( as my manager warned me he was one ) and he had a brownnoser that didn't want to run the road no more and let me go to give him a job . so it varies with them , you have good managers and bad ones at the company . when I worked for the first 2 guys ( VWR and Marmon ) it paid great and the managers worked with you , but when I went to the last account the manager was a ### and treated the drivers like dirt . but karma has a way with things as the company he represented closed there branch and didn't renew there contract with them . I tried to reaplly for a tanker run but I was told no . so once you go theres no chance of rehiring back with them .
naptown , even though I was let go , I can say it is a good company to work for, the equipment is newer and leased thru Ryder ( Ruan is no longer in the equipment leasing business) , and they make sure its all legal and clean , and its governed for 62 mph and if you need supplies like chains and straps and tarps they make sure you get it , they are up on that stuff . -
bleach, thank you for your input. It will help me figure out what I want to do. I think that it will be a good switch for me in the long run.
As it stands now with my company operating its own fleet, their focus is on production and transportation concerns are secondary so long as the product is delivered to the customer. I can't recall how many times I've refused to haul a load until a part of it that I felt was unsafe got corrected. I'm always begging for new straps to replace the ones that wear out. With all the new CSA 2010 regulations, flatbeds are getting a lot more scrutiny. It appeals to me to have the opportunity to work for a company that makes sure I have everything I need to stay legal.
If I can go off topic just a little, I had a dust-up with a production supervisor not too long ago. He wanted to add some material to one of my loads for me to drop off at a powder coater. It would have put me over gross so I wouldn't take it and offered to alter my route to stop by and pick it up later when I got rid of some weight. That wasn't good enough, and he decided that he would take it to the painter himself in one of our straight trucks. I tried to tell him he didn't have a valid license for the truck, but he insisted that his chauffeur's license was good enough and told me to write him out directions. My directions took him right past a state police post and a pull-off area notorious for roadside inspections. He didn't get stopped, but I sure wish he had. -
If you can get on with Ruan its a great place to work for pay is different in every terminal due to area you work and contract with company that you are hauling for I've been in Joliet terminal for 2 years now don't have any complaints except for some of the lazy drivers we have make as much money as I did as union local driver maybe more and weekends off you can't complain. If you have clean mvr and experience in tankers I would strongly urge anyone to apply. We work regional and run 2500 to 3000 a week and no slow down. Yes as previously stated safety is #1 any problems you shut down and get problems fixed and go on bottomline and get paid also.
