That is the correct answer.

Use the jake brake or steady pressure. I never had a truck that the jake brake worked correctly so spent my whole career using "steady pressure" method and never had a fire or any other problems.
I've caught a lot of grief about this method, but it works and works well. There's more than one way to skin a cat.
I've been over all the steep grades all over the country and never had a problem with the "steady pressure" method.

 

Turn the jakes on. Run slow enough in a low enough gear that you don't need to keep hitting the brakes to control the RPM. Don't let anyone passing you make you think you need to go faster.

Oh, and punch your trainer in the throat. He's an idiot.

regardless of what experienced gurus say there is a period during training where use of jakes is not allowed with many companies. it is part of the training
