Hah! all I-shift trannies got tranny dataplate on it. and they may have different torque limits, different gear ratios, different clutches (one ore twin disk) and different software, but are all assemblied in boxes looking like the same. I'm not sure about tranny case, but seems to me some are with thiker walls.
It is usual thing Volvo does. ZF As-Tronic /Freedom line are family of different transmissions with one name. Eaton does the same way!

i have never heard for 16 -
no 16 now.

than 12
16 is not good thing because of slow range in low group but 12+2C would be fine for some heavier applications -
I agree. New truck engines are more efficient and keep good torque at wider band and that's why when Volvo introduced first D12 they discontinued 16+2C transmissions (in the USA they call 16st + 2C 18st transmission).
But IMO, the best ballance of reliability, diraboloty, number of gears and price is in 10 st transmissions. That's why I like old good eaton. For European market Eaton makes synchro transmissions. I used to drive synchro too. Yeah, there is one advantage - you can skip gears (3-5-7-8!). -
for road operation no need for more than 12
but for more serious application need 14-16
but 16 have big problems with durability
i like mercedes way as powershift 12 and 16 -
EPS was a good tranny, but not smart ECU. Too many wires. TCU was in cabin and wiring to 8 solenoids, five shift sensors, two speed sensors were all from cab to chassis in big heavy wiring harness. All wires were wight (but number marked). TCU was really dumb comparing with new. No automated clutch. But it was the best product in 80s-early 90s.
later GS on early actros was better and used now on Axor, Unimog, Atego. GS-2 TCU had some kid's desearses but now reliable enought. It is tranny mounted, CAN controlled. -
scania had more advanced automated gearbox in 80s it was called cag
not very smart but you have only to press clutch for shifting so no selecting gears
eps was pain in to axx for repairing
we tried once to retrofit truck with eps
and we gave up -
I did tranny swap too. Onese we swaped I-shift with Geartronic) Runs well now)))) -
i know now
truck was 10/1992 2629 6x4 with mercedes gearbox 6gear and split gearbox called "110"
we tried to swap it to 16speed "130" and put eps on it
it is euro1 engine and at the end gearbox was inside but only as manual
geartronic is older than i-shift or is it powershift?
