So I've made the decision to buy a pickup truck. As I've previously mentioned I have 10 years of experience so I do have a pretty solid understanding of DOT laws in regards to tractor trailers.

But when are pickup trucks regulated?

When we tow something into another state? When they haul anything above a class B?,

Which laws apply to pickup trucks that are only hauling a single car as a side hustle job?, Where are the lines drawn?

The laws are pretty much the same when hauling for hire.
The only difference is with a pickup truck you get hassled by dot a whole lot more because guys doing a “side hustle” somehow believe that they are not subject to the dot laws.
And believe me when dot gets a hold of you It’s not pretty.

    Yes
If you are registered 26,000 # or under and travel over 150 air miles from your home terminal location.
If you are registered 26,001 # and you travel over 100 miles from your home terminal location.
If you run less than those mileages you are able to run a paper log book if desired.
Or if you run less than 8 days in 30 days you can run a paper log if desired.
Or if your truck is 1999 or older you are able to run a paper log if desired.
Also If you think an eld is expensive get a quote on for hire insurance.
You will need commercial for hire insurance in place to obtain your DOT active motor carrier authority to be able to legally haul.

So I'm going to assume that all of these regulations apply to a 1 ton even if there is no trailer?

What if I just want to put something in the bed?

Yes you are required to follow the regulations
If you are hauling for hire or use the 1 ton in a commercial business application.
If you use the 1 ton to pull a personal camper or personal boat ( in a not for hire non commercial application) you would not be under the dot commercial regulations.

ummm you didn't check insurance rates before buying a trailer? The suggestion would be get a insurance quote before you do anything.. Insurance in FL will be anywhere from $8k to 40k... good luck...

I'm in FL and use Coastal Trucking Insurance they are in Delray Beach and are a Progressive agent.

Anything over 10k is regulated. If you stay in state you only need a DOT# if you cross state lines you need the DOT# & MC#

No. If you are under 10k gvwr you don’t have to log or scale or any of that. You still have to have commercial insurance but you’re unregulated by DOT. Not sure how the laws work if you add a trailer to the mix.
