But where one driver might be coasting or gliding straight at the time, the other driver may have done one little tiny thing different.
You have to admit, in those conditions a very slight difference - a move to another lane, a slight brake to slow down, a slight addition to the throttle, a slight difference in road position (a seam or rut in the road, for example) - can make a huge difference where physics might bite you in the rear.
