    So my situation is this:

I have a good day job (but boring) in the solar industry that has a decent future if I stick around. Cant say its my favorite job though. I pretty much hate it. There it is, I said it.

I also drive trucks in the military part time and I absolutely love it.

Now, I have an opportunity to get my CDL training for free at a Community College if I want it. I am not ready to let go of my current job to get into what seems to be tough times in the trucking industry. However, I wouldnt mind having my CDL as a backup for when things pick up or when I just had enough of my stupid day job and want to do what I really enjoy. Driving a truck!! But taking this time off work to get the CDL though poses a risk of me getting tossed from my job and I cant really have that because the faimly needs to eat. I cant feed the family while job hunting with the rest of the rookies on here! :biggrin_25512:

Should I wait or say **** it and go for it??

    Thanks

If it's something that interest you, go for it. It won't stay down forever.

I would recommend waiting until you saw a stable uptick though, this would make placement easier.

If you get your CDL, and just sit on it for now. You'll be asked to take a refresher course in the future, before anyone will hire you. Mo of yo money.

When you do see it's picking up and it will it always does! You can take a weekend course or even a night shift course. There are tons of ways you can go though truck driving schools. And by all means don't risk your real income now. BTW if your plan on staying with a company when you start driving, a lot of the companies have their own schools for the price of a year with them. And that means you can save your free school for later in life, if you want to change careers again. Just saying!!!

If you can get your CDL for free, I would say do it. Never hurts to have as many opportunities for future careers as possible. And it doesn't even cost anything to maintain unless you get endorsements.

Won't work. It'll be obsolete by spring of next year. Solar panal installation will be going the way of the dinosaur within a few years. With a few exceptions of course.

The latest advances in solar tech, don't even use photo-electric cells/panels. Although there have been some tremendous advances in panel tech. It hasn't come fast enough to realize a profit at this late stage of the game.

There will be a need for "panel" installers. But the technology is vastly differant and simple enough for the average shade tree mech to install. But so is a sat dish. So I guess the job may be around awhile LOL

All,I live about 90 miles east of Houston and they have a weekend school there from Saturday thru Sunday for 12 weekends 10 or 12 hours a day for $2700.
I can relate to your situation,I am a millwright at a paper mill and I also get bored with my job a lot of times but right now I believe I'd hang on to what I have for the time being.
All,I'm 45 and believe me any job out there will get boring after a while but when you're married and have kids it pretty much changes the whole ballgame because whatever you decide will effect your family's life.
I'm going to get my CDL for a backup in case something happens to my job.
I've been hanging around this forum for some time now and been reading some driver blogs and have come to find out that this is by no means a "fun job".
Plus I've also learned that a lot of them will tell you if you think you are bored with your job now wait until you sit in a cab of a truck for weeks at a time.
I have always pictured truck drivers being out there on the wide open road somewhere,no traffic, beautiful weather, nice equipment, lot of miles etc.
But I have learned over time from these people on here that there is a whole different side to this job.

My advice would be to do a vast amount of research on this career before you dump the one you have right now.

Yeah I'll trade ya this solar job for the CDL. haha. These guys keep telling us how great the future looks for our "green energy" company but just recently let a couple hundred people go over near Detroit. They have laid me off every other month it seems like and NOW they are putting a plant in friggin China to go along with the one already in Mexico. :biggrin_2556: But yeah its lookin real good for us.

I've been doing a great deal of research and have been putting this off for over a year already to see how its going to unfold. Things arent any better yet but I think I can jump in with the help of my buddy where he works. He says his company takes care of their people the best they can. They drive reefers but my only experience is the slightly shorter military flatbed trailers. Its all good.

I know it is what I want to be doing. My main concern is stability.

I think its just about time to take the plunge even if it isnt immediately going to yield the big bucks like the old days.
