Price gouging happens when people seeing other people in desperation trying to profit selling stuff that yesterday and in a week or two from now will be worth much, much less.
It is capitalism. But I don't recall it ever being argued as a virtue.
I see it as wrong. I would not do it myself.
I am not even sure if we discuss the same thing.

I should have charged that dude at least $100 giving him a pull start rather than accepting his thank you handshake.

If price gouging is good or bad or neutral...your conscience will tell you. Brokers are good exemplification of it. Yet so many here complain that they take too much cut. They too do it in a perfect coherence with capitalistic spirit. We should hail them, not spit on them.

That's not price gouging. When supply is short to nonexistent and that guy has what you really need you'll be grateful to buy it at any price. If prices stayed flat he wouldn't have anything to offer you. Rational people aren't buying anything from this guy while people who are buying from him must need his stuff and seem to be happily doing it.

I remember back when hurricane Katrina and all.those storms came thru the Gulf Coast about 15 years ago. One of the main oil pipelines that came out of the gulf region and supplied about 90% of the oil needs for the southeast and northeast was shut off for a week. Here in Tennessee there was a run on gasoline and none of the stations had it. Everyone complained. Then all of a sudden they did have it but instead of $2 a gallon it was about $4.50 a gallon. Everyone complained but some of us were glad to be able to get it for any price. I'd rather have it available as to be without.

You're from Eastern Europe arent you? So you know very how well it works when you toss the Jews into ovens and keep all the store prices flat.

I charged a customer $75 an hour for detention last week. I now see the error of my ways and I'm regretful of my greed. I will issue them a refund check immediately with interest, and will no longer charge for detention. When the spot market rates eventually go back up, I will post my truck on DAT and offer to haul any load for my cost, because making a profit goes against the purity standards set fourth by others in the trucking industry. I hope all of my comrades in trucking will follow my example.

    Power to the People!!!!!

There are some circumstances where price hiking is acceptable and others that would probably be considered ethically askew.

For those old enough to remember, how about the Cabbage Patch dolls? I think that if you bought out all of the Cabbage Patch dolls and sold them for a profit you kind of are douche, but it's a Cabbage Patch doll.

Now if there is a pandemic and people need hand sanitizer to not catch this contagious virus that evidently is deadly upon part of our population and seems to be affecting our economy and many other things simultaneously, buying them up and trying to sell them at a profit should be highly condemned.

To me, that is the kind of a person that would sell his mother for a nickel.

    Not cool.

That's what makes all of this so rediculous. Yes absolutely, people who gouge people in need are scumbags. Toilet paper is a necessity. Hand sanitizer really isn't a necessity. In fact, the stuff has been around less than 20 years, and isn't recommended outside of a hospital setting according to the CDC. Washing your hands with soap and warm water is much more effective. How did we ever get along before it was around? We've been brainwashed into thinking that everything we touch needs to be completely sterile in order to live a long life, and that can only be accomplished by using hand sanitizer.

The same is true for the face masks. People are buying them up in bulk, but they are completely useless against a virus which is small enough to fit through the fibers of standard masks. They also aren't designed to prevent things from getting into your body, they're designed to prevent things from your body infecting others which is why doctors and nurses wear them during surgery and not while they walk around a hospital.

It may go too far again.

Just numbers, rates and lanes for me will be enough.
