Just wanted to get some thoughts on this subject. What is the best truck/driveline combo for a first time O/O that has the least problems and how much should you pay for this truck. What about glider kits? Setup is long haul for typical van/refer configuration. (80K gcwr) What are typical problems with your suggested truck and costs? How about maintenance recommendations on doing pre-repairs, over haul or in frame, ect. Let’s just cover the truck. No need to delve into the other O/O businesses aspects.

If you don’t have a need to go to Commiefornia, the most reliable and least problematic trucks are Pre-Emission or Glider trucks.

How much maintenance do you plan to do yourself?

With your budget you can get a really really nice fully rebuilt 98-99 truck. I would suggest a 99 Volvo 770, but I am biased

    Bakerman and supertrucker79 Thank this.

PM’s, tire rotation or replacement, parts replacement. Basically, anything that doesn’t require taking apart or pulling the motor and drive line.

Can you do breaks, wheel bearings, do s cam bushings and slack adjusters? With an old truck, you will most likely have several sets that need all that replaced because your brakes won’t work properly and always go out of adjustment. That can cost money but if you can do it all yourself, you are gold. It’s easy but time consuming

    supertrucker79 Thanks this.

Yep, can do all those things. I would outsource internal engine or driveline work. Lash adjustment, over haul, ect.

Maybe we can break this down more. Let’s start with the assumption of pre emission engines.
    1) Cummins x15 common problems/costs
    2) Detroit 60 common problems/costs
    3) N-14 (never had one in a truck)
I was going to add the c-15, but how much longer will parts still be available since the whole acert fail took them out of class 8 trucks in 2010, I think it was.
