Please, tell me what I did wrong?

    Good info here. I didn't know this about the medical card, and since I was gone 6 weeks, I guess I would have been removed from the random list for more than 30 days. Still, I think they could have been a bit more cooperative, rather than making me sit for 5 days without pay, 2000 miles from home. It sure seems like they could have made me pee in a cup, and let me go home, at least, before doing the physical. I understand that the law is the law, but the sitting for 5 days waiting for the results of the piss test, seems a bit ridiculous, to me.

    Thanks for the info, though.

    Tomorrow is my 1 year anniversary with these folks. Vacation is planned for October. When i go home for the vacation, I am cleaning out the truck, and will notify them, from Hawaii, about me quitting, with one week's notice. And, YES, they will know EXACTLY why I am quitting. After i am re-employed, I will let y'all know who this carrier is, so that you can avoid them, and avoid this type of clusterflop.

    I doubt you will get it, but I would ask for some layover pay or some kind of compensation since they were the ones that messed this up. Maybe if you push enough you might get a little something.

    Right, they would just take money from your paycheck every week for union dues to fill the pocket of someone in an office somewhere and all the other great stuff that goes with a union.

    Ask lots of people who used to work for elctrolux what the union did for them.

    You did do two things wrong. You trusted you Disp. to have some freaking brains. If she didn't know what needed to be done she should have found out. 2nd you didn't go throw safety. It's there job to take care of stuff like this. Well live and learn. If you even end up on WC like me you will know this BS. The only thing my DM knows is what and where. Other then that I have been dealing straight with Safety. Bad thing is they don't know I'm not going back to work for them. When I get back up and running. There done.

    Could be worse. After driving for 10 1/2 years I finally got a job I loved in driving, hauling gas. I wound up being in a car accident and badly breaking my arm (humorous bone) and needing two surgeries, one in August and one in October. All along I kept the company informed what was happening and they said all was good and I had a job whenever I was able to return. Then in December I got the only call I ever recieved from them... to lay me off. Then when I was able to return to work a couple months later they said they couldn't take me back. Took me a couple months to find something else which ended up being back over the road. Not at all what I wanted to do anymore. Oh yeah, the company has since hired 3 new drivers. :biggrin_25510:

    In the end I was recently hired by another company and will be back to hauling gas in a few weeks. But it took a year to get that back. Make sure you have another gig lined up before you quit. But I don't think you did anything wrong. It should be the company's responsibility to inform you what needs to be done to return to work for them. They did not do this and now they have you sitting making no money, missing doctor appointments and also they have idle equipment generating zero revenue. Not a good situation for all parties involved.

    Biscuit, you are not the first, nor will you be the last employee that a company managed to "get rid of," for no reason other than they were medically unable to work for a period of time. I'm glad you are finally getting back into something you like.

    I drove for Flying J for 4 years, and while off duty one night, I was hit on my motorcycle, breaking 5 ribs, and tearing rotator cuffs in both shoulders. While I came back in a week, WITH THE BROKEN RIBS, and did the job well, eventually, my shoulders got so painful, my only option was surgery. I discussed this with Flying J's HR, and they informed me that while they HAD to terminate me after 12 weeks, due to company policy, they considered me a good employee, and wanted me back, when I was able to return.
    It took 3 surgeries and 13 months to recover. When I went to go back, I called my lead driver, who was a great guy to work for (He got the job done, everyone did their job, with little pushing, and he treated us well, while following all company policies). He said that he was looking forward to my return, and was more than happy to re-hire me. 3 days later, he called and told me that HE had been fired (whole other story of real political BS) and I needed to deal with the new lead driver, who was the lead from another plaza, taking on the task of being lead for 2 plazas. I called him, and he said he would put my application through, but he didn't want ANY of the drivers he inherited, much less hiring back one who was already gone. I never heard from him again. When I called Flying J's HR, to ask what was happening, they told me that the new lead driver determined I was an "undesirable" driver, therefore they would not hire me back. 11 months later, when I heard Flying J was bankrupt, I wanted to dance a jig, on their proverbial grave. Now that they are being taken over by Pilot, I say he who screws others, eventually gets screwed himself. That lead is now going to be out of a job, entirely. As are most of the Flying J drivers whom I know. I'm sorry to see my friends lose their jobs, but I am happy to see this guy lose his. I guess, in the long run, he did me a favor, or I would be going through all of the same BS.

    I'm surprised Flying J would terminate after an accident. I'm with one of the majors and they will not let any driver go if hurt both on the job or off. After a year of sick pay they will move you over to their long term disability and you can stay there until you're 65. There's not too many companies that will do that.

    Anyway about the problem at hand. You did nothing wrong except cover your butt. You could have gone to every department that has a hand in your driving and made sure they have what they needed. I've always done that and I also make copies of everything.

    Make sure you have another job to go to before you quit. You never know, if you tell them you're not happy about what happened they may pay something for your time. Then you could quit.
