The only reason you would just "fuel for the trip", is you are close on weight. 7-8 lbs./ gallon, 200 gallons, or 1500 lbs, can put you over. Like pallets too, that's 400 lbs. Figure pallets and full of fuel, that's almost a ton over. If you're 79,500 without fuel and pallets, you'll be "bringing it 'round back".
Fueling for the load vs. filling up??

You buy the cheapest fuel you can. When you find it you fill your tanks up. To find the real price of fuel you have to subtract each state fuel tax. If you just want a free shower get 50 or 60 gallons

if you get paid by the weight you fuel by the trip. less fuel more revenue.
Gutter, not4hire, PE_T and 1 other person Thank this. -
And how does paid by the weight differ from anything else? Doesn’t it still just make more sense to get fuel at the best price? I know you burn more fuel running heavy, but what does it matter when you burn the best price fuel?Last edited: Mar 22, 2020

I fill up when I get to 1/4 of a tank, then usually top off on Friday’s before I park for the weekend, but I’m lazy and don’t drive much -
Half tank vs full mean you could another 1000 pounds. When you get paid by weight you haul as close to 80 as you can get.
Still more trouble than its worth but some do as they do. -
And like somebody else mentioned, I’ve played the tank weight game because I’ve been so close to overweight that full tanks would put me over.
But as a business model, and I don’t mean to be insulting, but when you fuel for the load so your settlements look good (as has been mentioned), that just sounds like poor business management and a lack of business sense and understanding balance and averages.
But I think I get it, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.cke Thanks this. -
Dump trailer paid by the ton, but I can make the same if not more with a fridge with 20-30k in the box, most of the time heavy stuff is cheap (unless you get into low bed stuff), less fuel and less wear and tear hauling lighter, just personally why I don’t worry about weight when I fuel,
