YOU HAVE THAT RIGHT !
I walked in to the one here in Seminole with several jail radios and 2 c-phones that I carry when on call .....
The guy looked at a $4,000 trunking HT and says to me " Sir you don't need to carry all that THIS will work better " and shows me a small flip phone ......
The next time I was looking for a small discone antenna to modify for 223 mhz and found one burryed back in a coner ... and noted that a salesman had been following me. He then asked what I was looking for .... and I told him a small antenna for 223mhz which this should work on ..... You see this comming .....
He then asked " WHO MAKES THAT PHONE ? " ......![]()
Need some opinions on radio/antennas

HA HA HA! WHO MAKES THAT PHONE?
Yeah I know what you guys are saying. If it's not a phone, computer, camera or something like that and you ask a question you can here crickets chirping.
You can still order stuff online from them at decent prices but I imagine since they have now changed there name to The Shack they will stop selling radio stuff on there website as well.

I'd like to install a 102 whip on my new F350 between the Cab and Bed with Truck Cap somehow if it would work. Or would a Wilson 1000 work better on the roof top over the crew area?
-
You would have major reflect issues. You could go with a ball mount on the rear of the bed.
-
A ball mount on the rear of the bed won't be any better. Depends on if his topper is fiberglass or metal. The waves I don't think bounce off of fiberglass, and if most of the whip is above the cab it might be ok.
But really above the cab is the absolute best hands down. -
A ball mount on the rear of the bed would be much better than the whip between the bed and cab. Between the bed and cab the antenna's signal would be bouncing off the cab and bed and most of the whip would be blocked by the cab. Fiberglass will cause reflect but not near as much as the metal cab will. And yes above the cab centered would be absolute best.

Thanks for the replys..
I do have a Fiberglass Cap and it's a Leer 122 which is very high towards the back. Also I have a slide in camper that complicates things. It has an Aluminum roof and sides. You probably know it has a over hang that is the bed that extends over the cab to the running lights. It isn't left in the truck after a road trip so I need some ideas on what to do there.
I've been reading and searching info on the web but I'm still undecided still. The CB will be here today. I can install that in the truck this weekend. I want to do it right.
So maybe a Wilson on top of the cab when the campers off. And a fender/hood mount when on? The Wilson 1000 would be too tall on the F350 which sit's high already so would a Little Wil be better then a whip/fiberglass cap combo ? -
If he does a ball mount on the rear he's going to be very directional when he transmits. Not something you want.
In this case I think a mag mount is your best option.
Of course my truck has a 102 on the bulkhead wall, just over a foot of antenna is obscured by the cab wall yet my SWR's are usually 1.5:1 and less.
How high does your truck sit?
A Wilson 1000 is only 5 feet tall.
A Lil Wil is only 3 feet tall.
But the difference is uncomparable. -
I'll measure the height but it's a stock 08 F350 so it must be over 6ft. I'm 6'2 and can't see the roof..I guess 2 ft.more whip wouldn't be a killer. The truck cap is about 8in taller then the cab starting about 1/3 of the way back.
Also I have the Slide in Camper issue. Keeps me busy I guess between taking the truck camp off and installing the slide in camper...
get back to you later... -
Shouldn't be too tall, I run a 102 whip and most freak out and think it's too tall. Most it does is touch a few tree branches at anything under 30 mph. A Wilson 1000 on the same truck on the roof doesn't even equate to the height of the 102 when mounted in the bed's bulkhead.
