Crude example but..... a coil with good timbers under it is like a mans root, if it can’t get up it can’t get off..... but I too in 33 years now have only seen straps used 2 times....

Ok thank you for responding.
Some of those sound like company policy more than securement regulations. Just understand the difference.
I occasionally put straps over my tarps too and I’ve been using the same USED up tarps I got 4 years ago with the purchase of the trailer. There is a time and a place to use them.
I also believe that 8 chains on a coil turns the rub rail into a zipper. There is a point of diminishing returns in my opinion.
Thanks for sharing though. Interesting how different everyone sees it.Eldiablo, 1951 ford, singlescrewshaker and 7 others Thank this. -
I have metal edge protectors with a place to run the chain thru. If I remember after I'm loaded I'll dig one out and get a picture
And I don't recall where but 1 shipper makes you use their bevels. And it's a different bevel than I usually see, shallower angle but bigger cut. And laid with the slope more horizontal than vertical, probably concern for the coil hitting the deck...Eldiablo, 1951 ford, singlescrewshaker and 6 others Thank this. -

Yes lawsuits I’m sure have been a major contributor to more stringent laws & regulation.
In the 80’s when I drove for Machinery Hauling, Pop had the coil trailers setup with 3/4” thick steel plates welded over the main frame rails. The plate ran from about 3’ in front of the front spread and extended forward about 6’.
Our biggest competitor back then was JRB, they had all blue R model Mack’s. They were some of reasons for today’s regulations. They had nothing but snap binders and obviously had no idea how to get a 1/2 link on a chain, so many just used a full link and ended up with a chain to loose versus tight....
I have metal corner protectors with a rubber coating, but no loop like the ones we had back then.... -
Like this? I probably carry 20 of them in steel, 10 in aluminum. Still carry the steel cut rings for bigger diameter too.
Now in a different world. When I was towing. You only lifted a junk, salvage coil with a chain. If it was being recovered 90% of the time they were lifted with synthetic slings. Edge protection was even that more important. Higher Wll than any chain, but could be ruined with a dull pocket knife.Eldiablo, 1951 ford, singlescrewshaker and 6 others Thank this. -
You can lay down 800 coil racks, and they are worthless if the restraints are loose or to few.... just my experience and observation over the years. But I don’t make the laws, and recommend all to follow the rules & regulations.....Eldiablo, 1951 ford, singlescrewshaker and 5 others Thank this. -
Yep that’s them lol, that brings back some memories!!
On heavier coils loaded shotgun, we would have 2 chains per side in a staggered horse shoe, and 2 chains running staggered through the eye side to side. Lightning bolt we called it....Eldiablo, 1951 ford, singlescrewshaker and 5 others Thank this. -
