Well I was driving home to Pittsburgh from D.C. and saw a big truck stop in Breezewood Pensylvania. So, I decided to stop and check it out. First thing was I noticed was there was alot of things inside to include subway, a gift shop, and a Dairy Queen, I think there was a laundry facility on the second floor. Lots of parking in the back for truckers. I have never stopped into a truckstop before so I have nothing to compare it too, but I thought it was very nice.

There also is a list of other restuarants in walking distance. It was just off of the Pensylvania Turnpike at the Beezwood exit. I think there also was a truck wash there as well too. I did a walk around of the whole building and never saw a thing that would make me nervous. I am sure there are much worse out there. But, this one looks pretty good! Very Clean!

Breezewood is nice, and I think that you will find that the majority of the truckstops located solely at the junction of a pair of major interstates are. The problems areas are more the truckstops located near major metropolitan areas. And this isn't all the fault of the truckstops either. It takes an enormous amount of money to buy 20-30 or more acres of land in an area where truck traffic is going to find you, since most truckers don't like to be far from the highway. And to find these parcels, in an area where the trucks will be able to congregate, usually implies property in one of the less desirabe areas. Which is why the majority of the Gary, In truck stops are located in economically damaged areas, usually on tracts of land that are close to being swamps.

So you have a local area in economic turmoil, which increases the likelyhood of prostitution, drugs and other problems, you have cheap land, and loose zoning, which attracts the porno movie book stores and strip clubs, and a host of other conditions that cause the area around truckstops to be somewhat seedy. And since you are dealing with a transient customer base, there is limited incentive to improve, because the customers simply drive off if they are unhappy with the area.

Playing amateur sociologist and looking closer at things can be entertaining, and you begin to realize why and how something developed. The truckstops are a fascinating example of this, and I always take a good look at the area around a truckstop and try to understand the economic, and social factors that are behind them. I also buy fuel there!!!!

Trivia note: Breezewood PA is the only location where two anomalies in the Interstate system take place at the same location. One is I-70 having a traffic signal at the junction of I-70 and US30. The other is the fact that I-70 crosses over itself.

Packrattdi, you are correct. I-70 also hits breezwood out of no where. I will have to take a closer look at a map, it did confuse me the first couple of times I drove through Breezewood; I got a little turned around.

I also think that I-70, and I-76 are the same route around that area as well!:bounce:

Yep. Example: If you driving on I-70 west coming into Breezewood, you cross over I-70/76 then come to the red light. Turn right (Westbound I-70 is now heading EAST along US30), then I-70 follows the turnpike access road to the PA turnpike (I-76) and heads west again on I-70/76, shortly crossing under I-70. :)

I been to many like everyone out here who drives a truck. Any where anything can happen. I been to the truck stops there in Gary and had no problems.

One rule of thumb. When you walk, walk as you know what your doing. Act as your the badest guy around, and they will go find an easier victim. After Living in NYC for 2 years, Boston, Houston, and The Bay area in Calif that is what I learn. I've walked from the Staten Island Ferry to the far end of the Central Park, No problems.

I was helping some run aways get back home. I heard some drivers talking about me some sound concern for my safety, and another stated did you see the Ball Cap he was wearing? He can take care of his self. I had a USCGC Sherman Ball Cap on, one of my old ships.
