Ok here is why.
Hope I can explain this ... not feeling well.
The registration of a vehicle for interstate commerce is called apportioned plating.
The states all agreed that where the truck is titled does not matter and neither does where the plate comes from because the truck is leased or operated under an authority created under regulations from the Feds which allow that truck to travel anywhere in the country so a truck registration is apportioned across all states that it travels in for road taxes.
A company in California can plate a truck in Maine to operate in Florida.
Now I hope that explains it or did I confuse you more?
"Your plates or ours".......?

Ya I get it, just wasn’t aware of it. Seems odd to me but I’m not questioning you. Never been in that position to have experience.
Thanks for trying to help the slow folk....homeskillet Thanks this. -
You need someone’s dot # to get apportioned plates so how are these guys getting their own plates without authority.......
They did away with registrate only numbers.... -
-
Yes , but if your just starting and not leased to anyone you can’t do that.....
And technically once you leave a carrier that you used their dot# to get your plates you have to get their dot # off your registration......homeskillet Thanks this. -
I thought the common practice was to apply for your own DOT # as private carrier in order to satisfy the irp. I could be wrong.
