Hello Prime Driver......Can someone tell me the shifting pattern for the 10 speed I'm use to a Mack truck that has a 9 speed and just wanted to get an idea of where the sweet spots are and the pattern. I hope I explain well.
Thanks

This would be the pattern for a regular 10.
And this is the pattern for a super 10.
Most trucks have their own sweet spots and it just takes some driving
of the truck to find it. As just a rule of thumb most trucks that I have
driven which are 10 speeds like to be shifted around the 1500 to 1600
rpm range.
Some others may say differnt but like I said it depends on the truck and
the drivers own personal preference also.
Another thing to take into consideration is wheather you will be progressive
shifting. Progressive shifting means shifting at different rpms as you go up
through the gears. Usually as you go up through the gears you will shift at a
higher rpm. -
so on the super 10 when you shift from 1and 2 spot into 3-4 spot does the splitter go back to the normal postion as you shift from 2 to 3?
-
To go to 3rd gear move the splitter back or in low range (while still in the 1 and 2 hole) and then shift it to the 3 and 4 hole. This will put you in 3rd gear. When you want 4th move the splitter forward or to high range andlet off the fuel pedal which will put you in 4th gear.
The above applies for shifting all the way up to 10th gear.
Hope this answers you question, if not ask what you don't understand and myself
of someone else will try to help.
For a regular 10 you start with the splitter in low range shift gears 1
through 5, then move the splitter to high range and shift gears 6 through
10. -
And for the record, Prime uses the regular 10.
-
Ok, so Prime uses regular 10.
Thanks very much -

One of the trainers in my school (in a r-e-a-l s-l-o-w southern accent) said, "Them gears are kinda like a woman... You gotta just play with it a little bit before you're gonna get it in there..."

lol, jason thats signature worthy...
Nitropickup Thanks this. -
Butted heads today with my instructor.
Trying to get a bead on what is going on.
I got switched into a different truck today,
I had been grinding gears on a fleet equipped Century Shaker (detroit?) 10 speed, actually did very well I was one with the truck (almost) clickin gears going up, a little scratchy going down. But to be expected of a rookie.
Anyway Today I get an 02 Vulva N-14 10 speed. The stick feels like a wet noodle and the gates are not straight up and down (and does it even have a detent spring for 1-R?). Dang thing is making me look really bad, can't seem to wrap my head around it. Instructor is giving me input at the micro level and confusing direction, compounding my frustration and making my head want to explode!
Instructor feels I am not in control of the truck and not taking direction, so we wind up at the side of the road having a radiator parles vous. I explained my problem in that I was anticipating a turn (where I've turned 10 times before, training loop) and hunting for gears. Instructor claims I was too close to curb for a turn. Instructor expects me to drive with a pretend 53' when I have a trailer that is barely longer than the truck attached (who's tires have never touched a curb by me)!
Whatever.... #####ed me out yesterday for not swinging wide when I was bobtailing (again tires never touched the curb)!!! I'm feeling like I'm getting singled out (instructor does not care for my racing background), and even with the shifting issue I actually feel I showed improvement over yesterday. Feh! If you want me to drive like I have a 53' hooked up, put one on it. I can pretend drive a shopping cart don't need to waste diesel..... We seemed to come to an understanding and ended the day on good terms not sure I will draw that instructor again in the remaining weeks.
My instructor was wanting me to shift at 1100, and I'm sorry but 800 in high gear by my ear is luggin it. I realize it's not a 6-71 and I can't just put a rock on the fuel feed, but this seems ridiculous and feel it is adding to my shifting difficulties. Since I am being asked to shift so soon it makes it difficult to match rpms and more than one of us has managed a few really violent shifts (i feel due to this technique). Also there is almost no engine braking at those low rpms so if I need to slow for traffic or to time a signal I have to brake and grab gears.
We are running unloaded so there is no momentum/inertia/mass to pull against and the first 3 gears need to be shifted almost as fast as you can get your foot off the feed. Oh, the Vulva has lower rear end gears so the shift points are ~5mph lower (in 6th) than the Shaker that I have been driving.
Am I guilty of manhandling the instructors baby?
Am I really going to tear stuff up running it up to 14-1500?
Isn't the tach green 13-1700?
What would be the minimum cruise RPM in the city for an 02 N-14?
How do I wrap my head around that wet noodle shifter and the slanted shift gates?
All input welcome, heckling even if deserved..
One step forward, two steps back....
