I know you folks get 500 new posts a week from folks like myself, but after searching through them, the clear cut answers aren't there, or I just haven't found them yet.
So here it goes...
I have a number of years driving everything from Reefers, Motor Coaches and Straights but I have been away for 5 years. After letting my CDL lapse years ago, I went to a school in 2004 and went on to Stevens Transport through their training program and then went solo with them, but I've been away since March 2005. Am I screwed? Will I need a refresher? Do any of you have any suggestions on companies? I am currently working as a aircraft mechanic in Afghanistan, however I will be coming back stateside soon and would like to get out of aviation for good (burned out) and go back to driving now that my youngins are almost off the "payroll" and don't miss dad being gone so much now.
Thank you for any and all responses!

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
Looking to come back to driving but need advise

Welcome to the forum and you stay safe over ther! I have no answers for you but I'm sure someone will.

most companies want "recent" experience to be within the last 2 or 3 years. and they want at least a year or so experience within that window. I would call companies and ask a recruiter what their requirements are as far as needing a refresher course.
-
Hear is the problem you will have. You started driving then got out for years. Then came back and got out for years again. Now you want back in. See the problem? If you where a recruiter would you hire you? Would you spend the money for someone who has a history of getting out of the industry? If it was me I would tell you to go to a trucking school on your own dime. When you have a CDL call me and I'll see about putting you in a training program.

Yeah, getting in and out of trucking twice doesn't send the best message. But, just knock on doors until someone answers. You will, in essence, be starting from scratch again. The overseas work history is actually a big plus. Kind of a Patriotic thing, right?

Well, I have a CDL and I have no problem paying for a refresher myself and I realize that I will end up going back out with a trainer, not a problem with me. I make great $$$ working in "hell", so I will be able to take the "hit" of the low pay while being retrained.
My overall work history is as good as anyone's, so I really do not see that as a problem, especially after reading some of the driver's stories in this forum. I also have a clean record (Secret Security Clearance with the DOD), a clean driving record with no DUI/DWI or wrecks in 33 years of driving.
Thanks for the replies,
