Yeah I ran intrastate, and there was some kind of exemption granted by the ICC to operate across a state line because of an "exempt intercity zone" or something like that.

I didn't know if they had that age restriction in place then. I was a little kid then.

A lot opf good posts here. For all of you just starting into the trucking industry, just remember a couple of things. Its a job and usually the better you do the job the better you will be recgonized. Its not a paid vacation, you are not gonna see the nice parts of cities, its usually gonna be the warehouse and industial areas you will be going to. I am retired now and I actually had a couple of really good driving jobs, and a few years of being an O/O.Its all in what you make of it,and it aint really any fun. Having a like for trucks is definitly a plus, but there again forget the 8 to 4 or 9 to 5 jobs.I can remember a lot of 16 to 20 hour work days on the road. But if I survived it,I am, sure all of you can,if you apply yourself.I have talked with drivers from every company out there, and some of them are happy where they are at and other ones keep moving around looking for a vacation type job,and chances are they will never find it.I have only bad mouthed one company and that is good old Swift. And that folks is from personal experience driving for them. I hear a lot of you badcmouthing a lot of companies, like Werner, JB Hunt, etc.but I dont know about them cause I have no experience with them.Your bigger companies,Schneider,Werner,JB, etc. seem to be the best ones to start out with. They seem to be the trainers for the rest of the trucking industry. But just remember ,when you are out there with a trainer then are assigned your own truck,it is a job,and the good old USA dont look so hot thru the windsheild of a darned old truck.

To tell you the truth, it wasn't enforced then. But I was working for a company who only had Pa. PUC (intrastate) authority. We were in Philly and the exemption allowed us to go to Camden NJ.

I don't know if it was required, but we used to carry a copy of the letter from the ICC in the trucks. And it was just a letter on a regular piece of paper. I can't remember exactly what it said, but there was a law quoted and an explanation of why it applied to my company. It was signed by a woman at the ICC and it had her office phone number on it.

The funny thing was she was the sister of a guy from the neighborhood that owned an auto body shop.

It might as well been a letter from my mother. As far as I know, no cop ever even looked at any of them. HeII we never really got stopped that much for anything. I think the only thing they cared about was overweight.

Oh and NJ didn't fine you for things they found wrong with the truck if they were doing a dot check. There was a pink paper that had to be signed by the company mechanic saying he fixed it.

I wish every new driver had to read this before they even thought about going to a driving school.:biggrin_25524: This is what you will look like after about twenty hours of driving.
