I hadn't notice CDL schools were teaching anything before this happened except how to park at the fuel islands.

Well,We have been getting some good press lately. I think it’s time for a change in Drivers attitudes. I have to say, a lot of newer Drivers are being vocal about conditions. I don’t see them as whiners or wimps. Just the opposite, the Current standard today has been caused by Drivers themselves, allowing it to happen. We’ve been so busy trying to adapt to the changes made by others, that have real life negative effects on all of us. Just going along with the program, hasn’t worked out very well. It’s time to speak up, Or just continue to complain, and blame the woes on new Drivers. That’s how we got to this point. It’s not working. Micro management, Driver facing cameras, 14 hr rule, lack of parking and facilities. Local cops w/ Dot Authority harassment. DAC ruining Drivers records. Who in their right mind, knowing all the real obstacles involved would want to Drive a Truck? It’s all gotten way out of hand. And Drivers are to blame, including myself. I know, if I don’t like it find another Career. Ain’t happening. Instead I’ll be as vocal as I can, politely, and continue to do my Job. It’s a start.

Someone on this site once posted a series of links to articles and press releases showing the ATA has been pushing the "driver shortage" myth for many years. If anyone finds that post, please alert me.
It could have been @doubleyellow who posted it. I searched and can't find it.

You know its only the big companies that hollar about shortage. The ATA pushes that narrative because they only view the big companies as the messiahs of trucking. If you ask all of them, there probably is a shortage. They got too big, and cant keep drivers long enough to take care of their customers. For those who are independent or small fleet owners, different story. Those who rely on the spot market will tell you there is no shortage. I always say it depends on who you ask. I think it's a shortage in some sectors. @Rideandrepair made some good points. If there is a shortage, the powers that be did it. There are good drivers out there, good skilled drivers, but with certain rules and regs, the talent pool dwindles

Can confirm. I've been applying for jobs since the oil market crashed. Still employed but wanting a fall back. 10 years experience. No tickets or accidents in last 3 years. No accidents with another motor vehicle ever.

I'm not getting any bites. I've tried calling the headquarters I've applied to and been unable to find any live human anywhere in the system. I'm not entirely sure the headquarters are open outside of critical functions like dispatch/mechanics. It's not just you. Weird times that we're living in.
