I have never worked for them, but I know of them. They have a satellite terminal in West Virginia. The home terminal is pretty good and they have a wash bay. They used to run Freightliner and Volvo with 13 speed transmissions, I have seen other makes of trucks sitting there now. I always thought they were on the up and up , but I haven't really talked to any of their drivers away from the company. They run pretty good trailers but they are all reefer trailers. They are smaller, but that isn't really a bad thing.

I drove for them from Jan06-July06 and as far as im concerned they were a good company, but with all companies they had their ups and downs. The ups were they were small, about 130 trucks so questions and concerns were dealt with really quick, great miles I was living in Virgina at the time so I was at home every 5-6 days with 36-48 hrs off, Excellent pay. VanWyk pays percentage. I beleive that it was 21.5% when I started but im not sure it may have been more, and also paid your fuel bonus every 2 weeks, There satellite terminal is in Waynseboro,Va not to far from 81n/64e split... the bad things are just a few drop/hook , long wait times for loading/unloading and all the grocery warehouses you can handle and more
The big problem I had with them was the detention pay or lack there of after sitting 27 hrs in Lemars, Ia for an Ice Cream load. But they do run 13 speed Volvo's and now a couple Pete's 65 on cruise 70 on the floor. All trucks come with Espar bunk heaters so no idling i the winter overall they are a good company and I would suggest them to anyone living in there hiring lanes.

Van Wyk Inc. - Sheldon, IA
Is there any drivers out here driving for Van Wyk? How is this company?
thanks -
I'm going to truck driving school Sept. 21, 09 in Norfolk, Ne. & i checked about 5 companies to go & drive for. Crete Carriers Corp., U S Express,
TMC, Trans Am, & MCT. Do any of you know about Van Wyk Trucking in Sheldon Ia. I need all the information you have about any company that will hire recent grads. Thanks in advance for your help. -
MCT out of Sioux Falls I can vouch for, but they are only O/Operator, so you will drive for a fleet leased to them.
I hear good things about Van Wyk also but I don't know if they hire drivers right out of school.
MCT has their own school, have you considered that? -
i tried to sign on with MCT, but they told me that they didn't have a trainer in my area. when i told them that i would drive up their they said how would i get home.
i live about two hours south of sioux falls. -
1 yr OTR exp required, but they do occasionally hire drivers fresh out of CDL school in limited circumstances, like if you happen to live close to one of the terminals.
It's a solo-driver operation, no teams. Reefers, hauling meat, ice cream and produce mostly. Got a handful of Volvos left, and a bunch of Pete 386's but all they're currently buying are Kenworth T-660s. Every truck has a Cummins ISX 450 with a 13 speed. Engine governors are turned UP, for heavy loads. Trucks have refrigerators, aux cab heaters. 65 on the cruise, 68 on the hammer for passing. 4 CPM fuel bonus if you stay within seasonally-changing idling limits and keep it at 65 or below 97% of the time. Paid %, weekly. 5-6 days out, home for 34 hours. Well maintained equipment, trucks traded in after 500k miles.
Cons:
No dedicated, everything's random. If you need to be home on a certain day for something important, lie and say you need to be home the day BEFORE or you'll probably miss whatever it is you needed to be home for. Tyson, their biggest customer, says "jump" and they say "how high?". Very strict appointments and tight schedules that don't allow time for showers. Recently lots of drivers have been saying the company is starting to treat drivers like a number and not a person, however I haven't noticed this personally. E-logs force compliance with federal bureacrats' version of reality and don't allow any flexibility for real life situations.
Considering all, for an OTR company I'd still say they're better than most.
