Our top driver made .44/mile, avg'd 3k-3.5k miles. Earned just dollars shy of $65K for the year. Could've made more if receipts for the truck expenses had been turned in and he got the reimbusements. Of course, we were small and couldn't compete with the benes the big guys offer.

The general rule of thumb is if you go to work for an irregular route common carrier, don't expect to earn more than entry level wages for at least 5 years. Private carriers or union jobs are where the money's at but you will have to earn your way up and pay your dues to get those jobs.

Companies can afford to pay a decent driver a really good wage if they wanted to, but because of their greed and need to show such a high profit margin every quarter, the driver is the one to suffer. I a firm believer if a company really wanted to be a top rate company, they would weed out the good drivers and get rid of the bad drivers. If you paid a driver a good wage, benifits, decent well specced equipment, and actually give him the comfort of knowing that he or she could retire comfortably, pay his bills, buy a home, ect, they would stay and be happy and companies would virtually see the "turnover" problem all but disappear. Trucking companies need to wake up and see that their problems are in big part caused by their own mentality.

If you weed out the good drivers and get rid of the bad drivers, who's going to drive?

learn how to log dishonestly and get away with it. that's the only way. however, if you're involved in an accident, you're pretty much screwed. even more so in these days of gps tracking.

3.14 running illegal is why the eobr's are going into trucks. The best way to make money is don't stop 6 or 7 times at a T/S during the your drive shift.
