Actually you get 70 hours of work. This may or may not be driving.
The place it helps can be at shippers and recievers. If you are sitting in a daycab waiting to get loaded you have to put it down as on duty not driving, which counts as work on your 70 hours.
If you have a sleeper you can flag 15 min for check in and getting a door, then if you do not have to be on the dock for loading/ unloading you can go to sleeper.
This is not an option in a daycab.
I know that when I was at Central this was how they wanted you to log, and I have never had an issue in an inspection running this way.
There are some instances that this cannot be done, but in most situations it is how they want it done to concerve working hours for driving, and you cannot go off duty when responcible for a load.
I now run flatbed. So my time at shippers and recievers has to go on duty not driving.I cannot log any sleeper time on flatbed, when getting loaded, because as the driver on a flat you must be supervising the loading of the truck and you must secure the load.
This is very much needed on a spread axle trailer because we cannot slide the tandoms, they are fixed.
We are allowed 12, 34 on tractor same as on a van, but 40 on the trailer with the spread, so long as gross does not go over 40k. When hauling heavy loads it is very important that I know what the materials going onto the truck weigh, so I can make sure that the load is ballanced and not over in front or back. -
Man, when I think they are going to get me back out west. They have me preloaded to go back into the NE. Don't even get to stay a half day here in Texas.
I hate the ne area. Too many people in those old cities. Was in Brookyln and Bronx last couple weeks. Heading back lol cry..
That's my vent for the day. How is everyone? -
I said we could keep the UP of MI. You could relocate there. Its just the mitten that needs to go away to improve the nations unemployment rate. I know, who want to live in the UP, but come on, it would mean you'd get to remain a US citizen

Man, crazy storm just hit ne tx. Severe warning out. Like NS lil flood started already in the lot. Time to sleep..like the sound of rain hittin the truck

Well said, Mr. Ranch. Your comments always reflect a thoughtful maturity.
Many decades ago my grandmother, a saintly and wise woman, used to say: The more you know, the more you know you don't know.mama mia Thanks this. -
This link may be helpful to those wondering what to expect with the "work-well" test. http://www.goroehl.com/downloads/id/Roehl Pre-Work Screening.pdf.
When lifting the milk crate up to eye level, it may be helpful to ask the examiner to re-adjust the shelf to your eye level, if the person before was taller. As I remember, they would usually catch that though. No climbing simulators. About 8 or 10 folks at a time in a room set up for the test. -
My back is probably my weakest link, I lift heavy stuff quite often but not usually above waist level, do you guys know a good way to strengthen my back so it would be easier on me to carry this stuff? (btw I don't lift with my back, just don't want to hurt myself)

Thanks a lot for that link. That's really a lot of help. Give's a good insight as to what I could expect at Central, although they may do things differently. Thanks!

Yep you are correct on the driving working issue. I got ahead of myself.Still not bad for a old fart like me. Your exception to the logging check in etc at shippers is probably Centrals requirement as I can't find anything in HOS that differentiates a daycab from a sleeper cab except to define what a sleeper berth is in measurements.
As far as checking in/ load/unload, when I had to log in the past I logged on duty not driving.
