Yeah butt, I wouldn't recommend she be out there by herself. Google truck stop rapes and murders and see for yourself.

So, are the long haul otr drivers having a hard time finding masks? Would drivers going through chicago be happy to get one free?
LoSt_AgAiN Thanks this. -
It’s a nice idea and I’m certain would be appreciated by those you reach. Legit masks are difficult to impossible to find otr. I ordered one online but it’s waiting at home for me whenever I make it through there. In the meantime I’ve been using a bandana with a couple coffee filters wrapped inside. I don’t see it doing anything to help me personally, but hopefully IF I’m an asymptomatic carrier, it might prevent me from passing it along. If you decide to do this, just be smart and safe about it.

That's nice of her. There are instructions on the internet of how to make them. One made with filter material from a hardware store , claims to be as effective as an N 95. Other research claims that masks, even surgical masks are not effective

It seems to me that most people do not realize that these type of masks DO NOT protect the wearer.
Are there really this many altruistic folks out there? I doubt it.tscottme Thanks this. -
we don't need research to understand this. If a bandana could protect me, there would be no reason for an N95 mask to exist at all.
IF homemade masks have any level of effectiveness (and it is certainly debatable), it is only with respect to preventing the wearer from infecting others. -
It serves possibly 3 purposes.
1. It keeps you from spraying spit when you talk, thereby protecting others from at least that much, and covers your mouth for sneezes and coughs.
2. It keeps you reminded to not touch your face.
3. It keeps ppl from spitting while they speak and getting it directly in your mouth and nose.
This may not protect you from aerosolized particles, but it keeps the big chunks off. I'll go with the CDC recommendation to wear masks. And yeah, there are a lot of giving, caring ppl in this world. Look for the helpers in any disaster. There are plenty.TallJoe, mpd240 and LoSt_AgAiN Thank this. -
That is what it is about. Basically trapping the moist air coming out of your mouth/nose that has the virus. Or at the least keeping it restrained. Someone joked that boxers/jeans don't stop a fart. But that is just the smell. It did stop the squirts that came with it. Or rather absorbed it. Again. No they are not meant to protect you. They protect the other person. But in combination it is safer. If you seen Japanese and other Asian places. You'll see people wearing masks all the time. They are doing it for two reasons. Air pollution and/or because they are sick. Not because they don't want to get sick.
LoSt_AgAiN and MBAngel Thank this. -
All that said, a homemade mask will not protect the wearer. Period. Zero percent effectiveness.
The fact is that this thing hasn't killed a strong healthy person yet, and it's not my job to keep people from being infected (as a strong healthy person I have no fear of this outbreak) Maybe they should have been taking care of their health all this time like I've been doing... -
It has killed younger, healthy ppl who exercise and eat healthy, etc. 40% of ppl in ICU units are under 50, and have no comorbidity. I'm going to take the word of scientists over a trucker on a forum. Spread your propaganda elsewhere.dosgatos, Wasted Thyme and LoSt_AgAiN Thank this.
