You could get authority back when it was regulated all you had to do was buy somebody else out but it was quite pricey!

Define “making money”. Lol. The problem is the rate is set for hauling 1800. I’m not sure the official term but doubles have been allowed into Iowa from SD for quite a while. They can only go a certain distance, mostly the Sioux City area.

It would take a bit more than $300 and a down payment for insurance. And that would keep most out.

I’m not clear on the federal authority, it was before my time. I know the area we could serve was quite limited, and I believe a failing 3 truck company was bought just to get the authority and the equipment was then sold.

I have the paperwork from when grandpa bought a guy out to get South Dakota intrastate authority back in the late 40’s. I don’t remember if the dollar amount was on it. But I do remember that authority being sold after dad passed away in 1991 and it went to the highest bidder for about $15k. And then a couple years later SD deregulated, but that’s how the cookie crumbles.

My brother and I had Negotiated a deal to buy authority from an older gentleman who was retiring back in 1989. Around that time is when we started to hear about deregulation, so we waited. Cost that gentleman quite a some of money.

@Long FLD so you have not opened an Mc during regulation period?

The reason I ask is because people in general tend to make mountains out of mole hills because they had not experienced it themselves, or have only heard how hard it was to get one over and over ever since they where kids. So it stuck with them.

Maybe you have personal experience in getting an MC before deregulation.

    but the point still stands.

industry as a whole was deregulated and later re regulated but this time it’s lip sided.

The Carrier has no protections from predatory brokers, they have no protections from law enforcement, or even from the industry itself.

That’s why either all or none. You don’t have to cap anyone’s profit, but regulate brokers so this double brokering and screwing over carriers stops.

have brokers go through testing, have them be closely monitored, inspected, and all the #### carriers go through. Why should they have back solicit clause that prevents me from talking to a shipper they did business with 3 years ago?

I can’t remember the exact story but I know it took my Grandma 2 yrs to finally get an authority to run. She would go to the city and bother them daily. Finally a congressman she kept bugging gave her the name of an attorney who wrote those in charge of it. All of a sudden they dusted off dozens and dozens of letters she had sent and approved her. Let me tell you, this lady had determination and grit. Growing up in the depression on a farm with 9 other siblings. I mean dirt poor. If she had trouble then 99.5% of others would stand no chance of getting their authority.

Im done arguing on all the other stuff. The horse has been clubbed enough I think. I’ll never be in favor of the government setting prices. I’d rather them be completely out of my life, but atleast now I can pretend I have control of my business and make my own decisions. If it happened the way some of you want, owning a business would just be a step up from owning your own job.

Edit: For the record I was still a kid when they got out of trucking. So my points of view aren’t from being handed some established company. I did it with a very old truck and trailer I paid cash for on my own. So you don’t have to go there.

To many people keep trying to fill a gap in the trucking industry where there is no need! You’ve got to fill a need and or have a customer base to make any real money! Brokers should only be a way of getting back to your customers. Other than that your probably better off being leased to someone who has steady freight and can take care of the headaches. I’m sure some run load boards and do well but that’s when demand is high. It’s a boom and bust , happens every few years.
