All very interesting, but you guys keep getting the name wrong...
(not my pic)
I remember from years back that when we went on trips to grandma's house, when we passed the CF warehouse we were almost home. Now that yard is office buildings. Just one of those dumb things that sticks in your mind.

Yeah, that was kind of a crazy deal with Canadian Freightways. We had agents in Canada, that could load us with CF stuff, if we emptied out up there, but stuff was still regulated then. I remember one of our hauls was new Caterpillar forklifts, from the old Towmotor works in Dallas Oregon, going into Eastern Canada, New Brunswick, PEI, etc. We would haul them to Bangor, Maine, then unload them and interline with Day+Ross to go to the final destination, even though we technically had Canadian Authority.
Worked out great for us, because if our freight went from the US destined into Canada, we got 2.10 a mile, even on an interline, back in the 70's,80's from original destination. -
2 and 6 bits (275 hp) 743cid. Had a unmistakable bark when they hit 1600 rpm. There are some good videos on you tube of some of them running. One or two of them at dusk to show the stack flame they produced.booley, not4hire, 650cat425 and 1 other person Thank this.

The absolute loudest truck I ever drove or heard in my life was an Emeryville NH 220 (743) with a Jake and a 5" straight pipe with a turnout exhaust. Most here have never heard a large bore diesel without a turbo to really have an idea how noisy a diesel is, without any restriction at all. Deafening under load, with the fuel pressure up!

Yes sir. I can testify to that. Got 2 normal aspirated trucks working. The ‘51 Diamond T with 220 743 in my a avatar Is louder than my 250 855 in my White 4000.
booley, Landincoldfire, Ruthless and 1 other person Thank this. -
What do you have them old critters doing, just working around the farm?
-
The old pig on the right has a naturally asperated 855 Cummins.
With a rotted out muffler you can hear it barking 5 miles away.
The pig on the left is turbo'd and has the same rotted out muffler. She doesn't make half the noise... -
Mostly playing. The T is a family heirloom and has been retired for almost 40 years. It was never parked to rot it was kept up by the family and driven frequently. It sits mostly nowadays because it needs new tires and it has 10.00-22’s on it. Couple of them are cracked so bad the tubes may start to come out. Lol. Original 5 hand hole 3 piece Alcoa’s. So the only tires are available thru Coker Tire at $450 or so a piece reproduction. It has a 52 or so mph top speed and I’m the only one left around here that can stir the 5x3. So it just gets driven around our backroads which are getting more and more traffic so that is getting harder to do. The White was an ex TXI Concrete plant truck that just moved 120,000-140,000 lbs of crushed stone from the blasting pits to the processors out in New Braunfels. It never saw direct in trans. (13 speed did not have the air lines hooked up for dir and od) but saw 2100 rpm a lot and never left the plant. It was beat with portland dust its whole life. I just use it now and then to run trailers that are to sketchy to pull behind my Pete.

HA! I swear Doug, you and I come from the same time. I remember old timers talk of the "Iron Lung", but was a tad before my time. I remember guys talking about a "split manifold" on those, made quite a bark. Gosh, those were fun times, eh?cke, beastr123, Landincoldfire and 3 others Thank this.
