I am putting together a business plan for when I get ready to make the jump to owner operator (not anytime soon with these terrible rates). And I was wondering would it be better to look at it from a cost per mile analysis or a revenue per day analysis?
If anyone is interested in this discussion I will be happy to share what I have figured so far and welcome any criticism.
Beat way to figure cost and revenue

How ever you charge a customer is how you should figure your cost. I’ve always charged by the mile so I figure everything by the mile.

Mix of the two. Whatever is highest. Go with.
Sortof depends what type of trucking you want to do as well. How far from home, etc.alds and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I’m wanting to do flatbed and stay with 1000 miles from home..insurance seems to be cheaper at that distance

OTR. Typically per mile, with a set target amount of miles per week, monthly, quarterly, annually. Figure solid fixed costs, and set parameters for variable costs. Run different scenarios, adjusting mileage. More miles, fixed cost per mile drop, maintenance goes up. Less miles, just the opposite. Be sure to run scenarios that compare 48 weeks vs. 44 or 40 weeks. The amount of actual revenue might surprise you, due to the fixed costs, downtime has a huge effect on the bottom line. Ideally maintenance can be scheduled to minimize downtime. Just play with the calculator, simple math.

All ways know your costs per mile!

You can calculate costs all right.
That's about all you can do with good precision.
Planning for how much you will haul the dog food to Petco is where the challenge starts.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I have read a bunch of threads on how people got started and what they did right and wrong. Hopefully when I’m ready to take that giant leap I will be able to pull from that knowledge and be successful. One thing I have learned that is common is “don’t haul cheap freight” I appreciate all the advice and knowledge.

You’ll be alright. The “reading is fundamental” part you already got down. Also an open mind. Many on TTR are happy to help such people.

But do you know what "cheap freight" is?
Cattleman84, Deere hunter, alds and 1 other person Thank this.
