As long as you are looking to split the trip why not just go to Kenly, NC? There are 4 good truckstops that have plenty of safe and well lit car parking areas that will not bother you for resting. Exit 105 on I-95 has Big Boys Truckstop and exit 106 has Petro, Flying J and Pilot. Any one of them will serve you needs well.

Sleeping in a car sucks. Pitching a tent in a patch of woods is much better in my experience.

Get a cot from Cabelas or a camping store and sleep on it instead of a hotel bed.

Then try and stay at hotels that have windows that open so you don't need the AC maybe. A $15 desk top heater from Target etc. instead of the wall unit in case it gets cold.

Have some cans of disinfectant and paper towels so you can spray down the hotel room when you get there. You're probably just going to shower and sleep there right? Grab a bite to eat. Maybe get a local chick in there for some quick fellowship.
