I watched that video a few days ago too. It really made me question cross chaining stuff on wheels if the zip tied model accurately depicts real life.

I only chained it like that because it was their requirement . Thats why i made this thread and asked if it was legal or not and what does it accomplish. Because i normally wouldnt chain something that way ... just trying to learn here like evrybody else . Its a good discussion to have , but i think them military boys got a method to the madness. There must be something about chaining them that way, which they like, otherwise they wouldnt require it.. Them engines not cheap i could imagine

Cross chaining those like that is perfectly fine BTW. Cross chaining is totally different than cross strapping(who the heck cross STRAPS?)... And those engines ive crossed them like that every time Ive hauled them.....Never have had one move. And every airport takes pictures of your securement and gives you the YAY or NAY....

What you are doing is putting opposing load force. One set pulls back, the other forward. These are also straight pulls. Just doing it inside/under the load instead of outside the load. Nothing wrong with that securement.

The guy that unloaded me showed me a trick with the chains to get them thru chain holes without taking hooks off... fold chain in half put chain thru chain hole and attach hook to end of the fold... u guys ever tried that ?

Works well as long as you ensure the hookstays vertical so that gravity holds it in place

I'm thinking combines are pretty top-heavy, especially those JDs with 2 engines in them. All the securement for those is even below the axle centerline. When I first started hauling JD combines, the rule was that the center four pulled down and the front and rear (2+2) were crossed to prevent lateral movement. They've changed all that now and everything pulls downat an angle.

I understand what you mean. I haven't hauled combines so take my comments with a grain of salt, or three..

I don't see how it is the same situation in regards to tie downs, the placement of them specifically. Once you put securement on the front and back, in addition to both sides, it kinda changes things.

The thing that gets my panties in a bunch is that there is only securement on the sides. That may be enough chain to be "legal", but I think there are other ways to use four chains more effectively. But his hands are kinda tied leaving the shipper as per their policy.

I’m not sure what airport you’ve picked up at but I’ve hauled around 10 engines in the last year and only had one take pictures, and nothing was said about securement. 58585963-6F4D-4BFB-B1C8-50797A40BE17.jpeg 7A78D5D2-DF0F-4FBD-AE82-99CE9C349060.jpeg AF405427-A14B-4450-BDA3-E559348731F8.jpeg
