still like that here in Alberta. after dark, anything with a blade that is wider than the deck must be piloted.

Well, it's true. Transporting heavy equipment is not as easy as it looks. It takes a lot of precaution like securing the load properly, checking weight limit, and sometimes even getting special permits as per the load size.
However the trucks used to transport the used heavy equipment are specially made that may easily haul the equipment without any issue. -

I hauled heavy equipment on low boys for a brief period of time. Aside from running LTL linehaul on the weekend it was my favorite kind of trucking.
Never pulled anything requiring permits as I worked for the .gov. Probably would've needed permits but we were "essentially" DOT exempt. Gov't doesn't eat its' own.
Tying down graders was a bit annoying due to length and tie down spots and the foremans insistence that all articulating machines have all chains pulling inwards no matter what. Would have to chain in the yard, get 5 miles down the road and rework all the chains as they would always come loose. Stupid #### that one was.
Aside from that, I loved it. Right amount of work to not be stuck in a truck and bored without being unreasonably dangerous like tarping in Wyoming. Too bad it paid 12.50/hr and no OT. -
I enjoyed it a lot. Mostly hauled heavy loads, but sometimes tall and heavy also in and around Houston Texas. Best pay I ever had in my life really.
