Then YOU make yourself readily available as soon as your unloaded. IF they tell you to "check back Monday" and don't assign you a load, then you put in for layover pay.

I think you posted that you've been driving 2yrs, but you constantly ask super rookie questions. You want to get ahead in this industry, you need to hustle. Make those dispatchers say "#### this guy hustles!" If you think there aren't otjer drivers that do this in your company, then you're dense. I have lease operaters at my company that ##### about sitting because of a lack of loads, yet they turn stuff down constantly because they "dont want to run to certain areas". But us drivers that dont turn stuff down, never sit more than a few hours at most.

A well placed $20 at some shippers will get you loaded real quick too. Saved me probably 6-8hrs of sitting a few weeks ago, when other guys had been there for hours and hours already and I was in and out in 2hrs.

 

See...if you didn't have the four days to go the 800 miles you wouldn't have had the time to read all of this great advice. And that's the silver lining.

 

Call dispatch and see if you can T call it the following day 500 miles down the road.

I work local, so take this for what you will. But my boss, who I get along with very well, will sometimes give me a rather short night, for whatever reason. Usually it's a slow night. I've been here 9 years now, and I know when I can be a little greedy, and when to lay off.

Lately we've been doing some work that pays pretty well, and it's a short night, usually 10 hours or less for two loads. There's a short run I can do to start the night off, do those two afterwards, and still be back in 12 hours. So I ask if that's a possibility. I've been given that short run and the two other runs every night. The other 3 guys won't do that short load to start their night. But I'm making an extra $230 a week doing it, and only working an extra 8 hours a week. Yet they complain.

Sometimes you gotta take the initiative to make things happen. It doesn't always work, but over the years, it has served me very well.

 

Calling the receiver is a great idea. IF you can actually get through to them. Some only handle emails etc. When I was active maybe half of the places I went to the load could be dropped or they would tell me to back into a door. As far as the load goes I recommend if you can't drop early to go as close to final as you can and just wait it out. If you stay in this business for long you will have these days. This was when I caught on my sleep or finished a good book.
