It would be great to be able to get a permit and go out with a trucker(a well-seasoned one:yes2557:) to learn to drive instead of a school.

I didn't know you could learn that way?? I thought you "had" to attend school? Are you sure you can do it that way? If so, I'm gonna start distributing flyers, LOLLLLLLL!!!

NO, you don't have to.. it's just easier in most cases, there are insurance risks involved in someone taking you on for the purpose of training.

YOU can get a learners permit from the secretary of state for a big-truck in the same manner you do in a car, learn on your own, and then go back for your final road test.

that is total news to me. I can see the insurance risks that would be involved etc. though. Thanks for the info though:) Denise

Keep me posted how it goes if you are gonna try it. I'd like to meet up with some drivers that did it that way.

Thats how I learned in 1974, running a dump truck (autocar) with my brotherlaw. Granted, things are a bit different today, but it is still possible............

The only problem is I only know of one co that does not require a school. (insurance reasons) That was the old way into trucking,,, yesterday is gone. Most decent training co's are only hiring exp hands at this time. Schools make money off of getting you a CDL. Some will turn out grads knowing they will never drive. You have to do a lot of research anymore. This is a good place to start.

Most co's want 6 months recent OTR or a recent grad and right now the recent grad is iffy....
