Considering taking the leap into trucking - For my family's sake, I would need to be home on the weekends- I have a 7 year old and my wife simply needs me there...Who are the best regional/LTL carriers out there? I live in Charlotte, NC - I am totally green, would either go private school or company-sponsored CDL, although I am leaning towards private school(TDI in Richburg, SC, 30 mins from my house). In the past, @Chinatown has mentioned Magnum, TWT, Crete(I think), Freymiller, FFE, etc as good options for me. I also hear Millis is solid as well. I also see that Old Dominion seems pretty solid....Any help would get GREATLY appreciated. Seriously considering NOT going back to my corporate desk job at this point.

You may want to look into a "Dock to Driver" position with one of the various Line Haul outfits. I'm assuming you are a young man, 30ish? It may take a while to work your way up the seniority ladder, but, Line drivers make one of the best paychecks in the industry. Good luck!

I'm 41, but don't feel it. I have a lot of energy and in pretty good shape for my age.

You may want to check it out. After a few years you can be making upwards of 100K per year! Work the docks.....if you show the initiative, they will pay for your CDL. You'll likely switch back and forth from dock work to driving for awhile. Stick it out and you can have a sweet gig and income to boot. I started driving at 56 yo. 60 now. A bit past my prime for dock work, but if you are good with managing your money, you can retire with no debt and a nice best egg by the time you are my age. Chinatown will chime in with the best opportunities in your area. Good luck

Yep dockworkers can make just as much if.not more than otr. Just have to work late evening/overnight.

Fast paced but forklifts are fun
