    1. Over pressurizing coolant
    2. RPM flutter at 1300 to 1400
    3. Losing prime.......longer cranking time if you choose not to pump it back up at the fuel filter housing.
    4. Fuel economy goes south.
    5. Loss off power on high load situations
    6. RARE And the soot being pushed into water/fuel separator filter. I personally never had this happen in my 5 years of ownership but other have.
    7. If you allow it to go on too long. Then it gets real noisy and almost undrivable. Ask me how I know!!

Looks like cups last about 200,000 miles. Didn’t they change the design to eliminate the problem? Can you replace cups and reuse injectors?

I suppose you can....but how do you know the soot hasn't damaged the inside of the injector? You can visually inspect them but soot is abrasive and you wont be able to disassemble them to rule out any damage.

It's piece of mind and if it's on the dealers dime they wont want to risk having to do the job a second time. As far as a permanent fix. No......just a band aid. The new tip is to use new injector hold down bolts. That might extend the failure rate a bit more. For under $40 dollars it's again piece of mind. ( @KB3MMX recommended the replacement of the hold down.bolts. He gave the community this tip.)

You might be asking.....how much does it cost?

The 6pack kit runs about 3300 to 3600 with core charge credit. This does not include the injector hold down bolts. 36 and change.

Dealership charge anywhere between 5600 and 6000. This should include the overhead, engine brake and ecm calibration. You may need a new valve cover gasket.

If you can find an Independent Volvo shop the cost is less. But they may not offer the warranty that the dealership offer. 1 year or 100000 miles.
@nasriza @QUALITYTRUCK can add more about their respective shops.

Now I got extremely lucky on what this will cost me this time around. I found the 6pack kit on ebay factory sealed for 1600 local to me with no core. Was missing the cups and o-ring. The shop I use is charging me 1100 labor and spent 388 for o-rings and stainless steel cups/hold down hardware. I might need a valve cover gasket.

Update:! I took it to the Volvo dealer a few months ago and asked them to figure out what the problem was because I thought it was cups or injectors and they said it was algae and supposedly cleaned the tanks out, added a chemical and installed a new filter and gave me a bill for $937. I have change the filter a couple times since then and it always turns black after about 5000 miles but the filter does last about 30,000 before the level starts getting up there so I’ve decided it is normal and I’m just gonna live with it. I’m gonna wait for other symptoms to develop before I subject myself to another dealer fleecing.

Interesting I have had this truck 6 years and never had to deal with algae. 5 years just using the major truckstops. Now using a lot more mom and pops stops.
