I did that pre-Covid layoff. Doubles were easy enough, but local just didn't pay well in my area and then you throw in slipseating in some of the nastiest tractors I've ever seen and traffic commuting to and from work turned me off it.

My old manager from that local job called me a couple weeks ago asking me if I wanted to come back. I told him, thanks, but no thanks. I will stick with OTR for now.

Livestock, lowboy, end dump(grain, lime, or fertilizer) and not necessarily in that order. Usually if I’ve done one for a while, I’m ready to switch and do the other. I’d rather haul just about anything overweight and or over width, than haul a horses on a 53’ bull wagon. They sure don’t ride as good as cows. Hauled several loads of horses, to slaughter.

I was slipseating for a few years, but within the last year I've had enough seniority to get my own bid with an attached dedicated tractor. It's been wonderful.

like a few others that have responded, i too did many different types of hauling. just not over-dimensional stuff.

i seemed to have always gone back to van, general freight. less problems for me to deal with, like leaking, strapping, tarping, checking temps, etc.etc.

Staying away from home is definitely a skill at first it’s cool, but when you’re heading out already ready to go back home it’s no bueno. I miss the road, I wish I can head out for a week every 6 months to get my fix. But I don’t miss being away from home

There is nothing I miss about the road. I can go as far out as 325 miles away from my terminal, and that's far enough.

Now eventually I WOULD like to drive around and see all the old Procter and Gamble towns I used to go to when I was dedicated for Schneider National. But my wife will be playing in the back of the RV with our two little dogs while my English Mastiff sits in the passenger seat helping me navigate.

    We're doing it in STYLE.

Hard to do unless u run cross country. But flatbed freight doesnt really move like that.

well when you put it like that lol. But doing chemical work I had a lot of “so this is where they make blah blah blah at?”!! Moments. That and don’t get me wrong southeast Michigan is cool when you get to know the inner cities. But I enjoyed driving through the allegheny, driving across the gw every now and then. We had a spot that took me around Jamestown, ny that was really nice. Idk Schneider had their own gps based route but I always took the scenic route. Even took the back roads in Iowa and ended up in some hills where you could see the whole country side. Now I don’t miss the commercial truck stops, waiting for assignments the potholes of Midwest, catching rush hour traffic in cities your not familiar with. West Virginia in daytime is pretty cool but at night is a scary sob. I remember waking up in certain cities and having to try local food which reminds me never order a pizza in Chicago unless you have 5 others with you. A small pie is a extra large deep dish everywhere else in the world. Pizza in nyc is overrated and overpriced.
