10 years is what I need to get a job?

I have a lot of time where I was self employed. I can prove my income back to 2002.

Will I have to get proof from the IRS of my 1099's back to 1999? I sure don't have my returns back that far.

I am trying to have all my ducks in a row upon graduation.

I would say cover all your bases and get any documentation you can. All of the applications I've filled out wanted work history for the last ten years. A few students in my class had been self employed at one time and had to get verifying documentation as proof.

if this is your first driving job, they usually only require 3 years - 10 years for applicants with driving experience. I've kept all my tax returns since I've been filing - going back to 1994.

If you were self-employed they will need to see your Schedule C, with your "doing business as" so they can track (and training companies will) for 10 years. Every company I have applied to needed this before they would invite me to orientation.

Good luck getting it fom the IRS, I had to spend a day in my storage locker and Kinko's making copies. One guy in my orientation who was a handyman and never even had a business license or business insurance was sent home. If they cant track that self-employment, they call it gaps in employment and will not hire you regardless of what kind of work it was. (Fed Law) Even with all my schedule C's , I had to contact the country seat for two of the years and show them a copy of my business license because it did not show up on the business insurance data base. I remember the lady in recruiting telling me they loose like 3 out 10 students who sign up ..for lack of proving their self-employment. If everything does not line up, they will not argue...they will just tell you they can hire you at this time.

P.S. They haved changed the regs, all drivers must submit 10 years. They can use 3 years for pre-employment, but before they will train you, they will require it, they also hold up the federal training funds to the companies if all the verification is not in order.......so you know the big training companies will not do anything until they have all the T's crossed. I think they have 30 days to compile evrything, there was a guy posting here a while back, that got jerked off a trainers truck, because some of self employment did not jive from 7 years ago. I will try to find the thread for you.

Well, I am going to have to do something. My exwife doesn't have anything.

I can try contacting the guy that did my taxes back then. He is still in business. If not the IRS is the only other way.

I never got a business license. Everything was done off my social security number.

Too late to call the accountant right now.

Rug trucker dude, here's the straight scoop. ALL trucking companies require a 10 year work history on their apps. However, they only have to verify back 3 years. Once in a great while, you will run across a company that verifys back 5 years, but it is not a federal requirement. Almost all companies will accept tax returns for self employment or possibly letters from family/friends that you were self employed or un-employed. So just worry about the past 3 years.
