They’re doing that in Virginia & Florida at the rest areas as well, installing no parking signs on the shoulders to deter trucks.

They put poles up along 40 in arkansas bout 2 years ago. They all have been run over snd pushed to the ground now. I wonder how much money the state wasted on that bright idea?

That's incredible. I guess the second semi that hit him was following and when he hit the back of the first truck he came to an abrupt stop and the next one that was moving nailed him. That truck is demolished. That looks like a really tight area to be parking overnight.

On a narrow road like that if someone happened to wander into your lane it leaves you with no place to go to miss them. You either hit someone doing 70 or a parked truck. You are going to lose no matter.

And the majority of the rest areas along that particular stretch of I-81 are very small and can only handle a certain amount of trucks(at least 1 or 2 of them prohibit truck parking outright).

I agree. To be clear, parking on the shoulder of the actual interstate is what I was referring to. Even the fools who park on off ramps don’t do that!

You're right. There has been literature and some studies done on this over the years (no, I don't remember exactly where or when so I'm not going to cite anything). Basically, driving while drunk or fatigued is similar and in both cases target fixation and the inability to correctly process visual information is an issue. So, they see lights and drive right into them.

Up here we have fewer dedicated truck stops, but we do have a lot of roadside turnouts. Most of the time when I am using a turnout I turn off all my lights to avoid getting run into.
