I want to removing a fairing off the side of my cab. Can anyone tell me how to get these out? Are they rivets or bolts? How can I remove them and where can I get new ones to fill the holes? Thanks.

Them there are rivets. You'd have to grind them off, which would probably screw up the paint on everything, or grind a flat spot on the rivet and drill it out.
You'd probably have to go to a body shop to have them reinstalled. I thin k it takes a special gun. -
I figured they were rivets, but couldn't figure out how they put them in since any rivet I have used has a hole in the head where you pull the wire through. Grinding should not be an issue since the only thing I will damage will be the fairing which I do not need anyways. Does anyone know I can buy these and the gun to put them in with?

I do believe they are huckbolts similar to rivets. As far as the tool you need to replace them, very cost prohibitive to buy and very difficult to rent, around my place anyway.
If your going to replace them with OEM huckbolts your better off removing interior panels (your gonna have to anyway if you replace with huckbolts) to get access to them.A lot easier to drill or grind from inside anyway.Last edited: Sep 8, 2009

You could use stainless screws, or if you want to remove the interior panel to get to the back of them, stainless machine screws with locknuts. Pop rivets aren't going to look too good, and plain steel screws or bolts are going rust and look like crap too.

I just read that you actually have to cut the nut to get it off a huck bolt. I may just grind them off and replace with a small carriage bolt to get a similar look. Thanks for the help guys.
The Challenger Thanks this. -
Drill them out, they are more than likely aluminum. When you get below the head of the rivet, just give the drill bit a small vertical "yank" and the head will snap right off instantly. The correct way to do this would be remove the interior, to recover the other end of the rivet/huck. Be sure to use an awl to make a "set" mark and then step-drill, use a very small drill bit, and then work up to a larger size. Shouldn't take but a minute to drill them out.
Replace them with blind rivets. If you know anybody that works in aircraft invite them over, and you'll get schooled on the proper way to drill those out... -
You could use a rivet shaver on it. They're designed with a microstop to get the bit within a few 100ths and not mar the work material. They can be used on either the head or collar.

when u remove the fairings, u will have a bare spot behind the fairing,, do to painting the truck with the fairings mounted.. i tryed it

Why would you want to ake the fairings off anyway? they are there for less wind between the truck and trailer, i would think it would be better to leave them on.
