Hello Siba again Oh by the way 25yr old lady from Cali just trying to get as many questions as I can answered before I get on the boat This will be my first time in the real world of trucking not at my school anymore aka far from Kansas:smt045. The more I read about May trucking Co. The more I get nervous. Especially being that I head out with them on the 18ths of Dec.
But now on the flip side another company has come into the picture. "Sherman brothers" their a flatbed company and they want to put me into some program or freight called the glass fleet where I would do nothing but haul glass up and down the I-5 of course on a flatbed. But is that to much for a beginner? And Sherman Brothers also wants me to get my own tools such as hard hat, gloves, steel toe boots, wench bar, 5th wheel puller and a few others that I can't remember. But shouldnt Sherman Brothers provide the tools I need? Why should I have to come out my pocket and buy them?
So now my question is which company is the worse of two evils. I already know that which ever company I go with I'm going to get the bottom of the barrel. But you have to start some where so I don't mind sweeping the deck to earn my keep til I've paid my dues:smt001
One of the main things that attracted me to May Truck'n Co. of course was the high pay they offer for training starting at $500 a week. Where as Sherman Bros only offer.14cpm during training which runs off to about 350 wkly. Then after training May starts at .32cpm and Sherman Bros is .28 cpm. Sooooo now the main question is do I buckle down and go with which ever company offers a brighter outlook for my future as a newbie trucker? Or run for the highest dollar? Then again my knowledge about both companies is very small. So who should I pick? May Trucking Co.? Or Sherman Brothers?
Wisdom from experienced truckers always much appreciated :smt045
May Trucking Co. Vs. Sherman Brothers Which way should I go?

You don't need a 5th wheel puller, but it does save your shoulder from getting dirty.........

Siba: HI! try to get get into a union shop, like u said @ da beg. u have to pay ur dues, but @ no time u'll be @ top scale. I've made da same mistake when i started, and all da time i've wasted. Good Luck!

Why should the company pay for your tools? If you were an electrician, or a Mechanic, or a carpenter you would need your own tools....All of the things you mentioned are for your safety or comfort..........you can go with out them.........
-
Yes, you get to start on the bottom of the poop pile, stay there for two years and then start moving up the pile......all the time, paying your dues...receiving very little representation (and what here is is geared towards the folks who have been there for 20 years) and in the end your compnay goes broke and your pension plan gets raided...............
Yes! I want to join a union plant......... -

I like May trucking ,they seem to have state of the art equipment and they supposedly have a lower then average turn over rate,I have been looking at them also but am trying for a little better home time,If I remember correctly there recruiter said 10 to 14 days ouy on the average

Read the link I posted above....................Never listen to what a recruiter tells you....they get paid to lie.......That is their job, professional liars.
State of the art equipment? No big company has state of the art equipment......They may have newer equipment than the next guy but I guarantee you that it is a stripped down fleet version.......State of the Art........Now that is funny......I don't care who ya are (To quote my favorite redneck) -
Glass Hauling is a nasty job with a bit of danger to go with it if you go with Sherman Bros you will get to go to glass school no fun I hauled glass for a little window manufacturer and it suck and they sherman bros ar talking about 14 ft tall sheets of it. May I would soon go back to work for SWIFT then those people. Honestly CRETE is the only carriers I have been able to find on here with a good rep.

i have hauled glass before and your right it is no fun but it pays the same. that's why companies haul fak (freight of all kinds). be careful with swift. whoever you decide on at least do yourself a favor first and talk to some of there drivers and check it out really good. your first company is very important. i do hear good things overall with crete. and welcome to the forum. ask all the questions you want and you will get answers here. but only you can make that final descion. read all and listen to half of it. everybody is different. any company is what you make of it and your attitude towards it. good luck.
