Well, once I buy 2 more units and get back to 10 assets in the spring, I’ll probably focus on owner ops. I would have thought it would be easier to add owner ops, but it hasn’t been so I just kept expanding trucks over the years.
Ideally, I would get back to 10 assets, then add 4 owner ops, to be at 15 total units. I would be very pleased with that.
I think I’ve been slow to add owner ops because I prefer to have a lot of control over how the trucks run. That’s pretty much counter intuitive for people who own their own trucks. I offer 1.50 per mile, loaded or empty, with no deductions except fuel. I was up to 1.70 back when things were “good”. People don’t seem to like a set rate and since no deductions, I prefer those units to be forced dispatch.
Ive come to realize that people prefer a percentage even if deductions make them earn less overall. The per mile guys seem to want the comfort of a mega which I can’t provide. Sortof, a catch-22.
We’ll see what happens. I may revamp my program if it comes to that. I just don’t have any interest in running a bunch of trucks if it means making pennies on the dollar. Not worth it.
For the haters, my owner op has been with me almost 5 yrs. He does well and was nearly broke when he came here. So, to each their own.

We are turning it around. Did 2.73 on 7100 total miles for month of july. 14 loads. Hoping to keep this momentum going. Starting to make up for how bad march and april was.

No hate here @midwest. It’s cool to see how different people make trucking work. So many people want so many things out of a job. So many people don’t want to be the boss. Few do really.
Were I to compare my former career (25 years with a big shipping co) I’d say I was very happy to make the equivalent of probably $1 per mile (converting this loosely, I was hourly) and just show up and drive. No decisions, no drama, no risk and not much reward. I was happy then though.
Now, I’ve flipped that. Still happy doing it totally different now.
The burden of stress you bear running 10 trucks scares the heck outta me! Different strokes. -
