What emergency repair items should we keep in the truck? After 20 years as a company driver, my husband has just become an owner operator. Last night what should have been a 10 minute delay/ $15 repair became a 2 hour delay/ $260 repair when he blew a hose clamp and had to have the clamp brought to him. I know I have read lists of what to keep in the truck for emergency repairs but don't seem to be able to find that info now. Help please!!!

Simple things like belts and hoses can be big money and big time losses on the road. If your truck is different from the norm, ie a Freightliner running a Mercedes engine, when you break something in the middle of nowhere, expect to lose BIG money and LOTS of time getting it repaired.

a basic tire repair kit so plug leaks from picking up nails and what nots, airline splice kit for blown or broken airlines, a gallon of oil, water, and coolant, pint of all purpose grease, can of WD40 or what eva you prefer, and cheap tool set from walmart is worth it's weight, but the most important tools to have are assorted vice grips, channel locks, and adjustable wrenches. it's best to have a small and large of them all. you can always use the large one as a hammer.. oh, and dont forget the pipe, (makeshift pullhandle/ extension) that's all i ever remember my dad having.. you could add more but it kinda depends on how ya run.

Are you sure he was a company driver for 20 years? Since he can't carry an extra engine/tranny/radiator/turbo/water pump etc, he can carry duct tape/bungees/basic tools/coolant/5 gal water container,full/spare headlamp/spare mud flap/wiper blades/fan belt/radiator hose,2/WD40/wiring/jumper cables etc.

The best protection against road breakdowns is a very thorough preventive maintanence program. Check and replace all fluids,filters, belts, hoses ect. before it's a problem. Grease the truck bi-weekly yourself, not so much for the grease but to get under the truck and inspect everything. I get a little excessive some times but it works for me. I change all the belts, trans and rear lube, flush and new coolant every year. Every other year ,new batteries, all hoses and clamps, P/S fluid, flush and filter. I'm always looking for potential problems like hoses and wiring rubbing, ect. I carry a set of belts, clamps , misc hoses, light bulbs, fuel filter, ect in the truck.

I always carry an extra charge air cooler hose along with the other things mentioned above.

1. Tool kit from WalMart,or an auto supply store. 2. 2 gals of oil.3.3-4 gals of water.4. Hose Clamps(various sizes)5. Air line repair kit.(most T/S have these)5.Duct Tape 6. Elect Tape.7. Circuit test lite($2.99 at Auto Zone)8.Vise Grips(small and large)9.Hammer 10.Some wire for light repair. 11.Hi and Lo beam headlight 12.Bulbs. 13.Stop,tail.Lights 14.Tire repair kit.15.W/S wiperBlades. This will get you by. Add items as need arises. Oh yeah-replacement belts and a #### good Flashlight-Things rarely break during daylight hours, they break at night just to aggravate you.
