    No, you don't, go to any state certified training school. They will rent you the truck and administer the test, having already held the CDL your driving history and prior school will still be relevant.

    If a local school isn't available get a friend who has a CDL to drive the renter to the DMV where you can test. Only an idiot would pay thousands to redo a school.

    wrong again. not all schools administer the test for the DMV road part of it. i know for a fact, my state does not do that.

    at my state, the DMV administers the testing for the backing and road, as well as the pre-trip.

    do not assume this can be done every where.

    and what would one do, if one does not have a friend with a truck and a CDL..??

    depends on the state. some, you have 30 days, some you have up to 90 days. but do not forget, the o/p TURNED IN his CDL, he does not still have it..!!!!!

    They "took" mine when I didn't submit a valid med card. DMV showed my license as an E or whatever a car license is.

    It was much longer than 90 days too. At the time, my last med card expired sometime in 2003, I reinstated my CDL end of 2015. No retesting or anything like that. Just $50 for a new med card and the $90ish for CDL renewal.

    Regardless, point is don't assume your CDL is gone. Check with the DMV first or better yet go get a new med card then contact DMV.

    My comment "self certify intrastate" was meant to be a broad comment describing a process you can do to save the CDL in the absence of a medical. It was based on how this process is presented by the Virginia DMV from DC-8.

    I do not know how the other 49 states do this! But in Virginia, it is ALL a self-certification!

    EDITED:
    I am aware that you can also self certify interstate and not have a medical card. Still, regardless of what block you check of the four available, it's all still a self-certification in Virginia!

    I am nowhere near an expert on the technical aspects of losing a CDL and what can happen later! I do know though there is a bit of a difference between losing the CDL over a lack of a medical card and just turning it in like the OP seems to have done. REGARDLESS, the OP needs to get back to their DMV ASAP and make sure!

    I just want to clear something up. While it is possible to drive interstate excepted W/O a Medical! There are some restrictions. For the average OTR driver with the OPs kind of a problem, you CAN NOT self certify excepted intrastate.

    Examples of interstate excepted.IF these conditions does NOT describe your driving, you CAN NOT choose interstate excepted!

    Interstate Commerce: You operate in excepted interstate commerce when you drive a CMV in interstate commerce only for the following excepted activities:
    To transport school children and/or school staff between home and school; As Federal, State or local government employees;
    To transport human corpses or sick or injured persons;
    Fire truck or rescue vehicle drivers during emergencies and other related activities;
    Primarily in the transportation of propane winter heating fuel when responding to an emergency condition requiring immediate response such as damage to a propane gas system after a storm or flooding;
    In Response to a pipeline emergency condition requiring immediate response such as a pipeline leak or rupture;
    In custom harvesting on a farm or to transport farm machinery and supplies used in the custom harvesting operation to and from a farm or to transport custom harvested crops to storage or market; Beekeeper in the seasonal transportation of bees; Controlled and operated by a farmer, but is not a combination vehicle (power unit and towed unit), and is used to transport agricultural products, farm machinery or farm supplies (no placardable hazardous materials) to and from a farm and within 150 air-miles of the farm;
    As a private motor carrier of passengers for nonbusiness purposes; or To transport migrant workers.

    You do not have to prove to the state that you are going to be doing any of those things to choose the "excepted" category. I chose "excepted to keep my CDL alive when I retired, just in case I ever decide to drive again. (You never know. I've had some pretty nice offers of part time work). I told the people at the license office that I choose to be in the excepted category and that is all that is necessary. No questions asked. That's why it's called "Self" certification.

    In Texas In order for both excepted and non- excepted intrastate certification to not require a med cert. you have had to be operating a CMV before August 28, 1989. Not too many of those around anymore. Read the fine print Texas requires a med cert on everything.
    Not sure about all the other states but a lot are the same. They say you don’t need a dot physical but still have to meet the state health requirements which in Texas are the same requirements so you still need a dot cert med card. You have to get full on ag exemption to bypass this and that does no good if you are not a farmer/rancher.

    I moved from Georgia to Virginia in 2013. Sometime later I had my CDL transferred to Virginia. I was still looking to drive some along even though I had "medically" retired. Then I saw the "handwriting" on the wall and knew I could never get a medical and had my CDL changed to excepted intrastate, then later Virginia canceled ALL my driving. Today I only have a state-issued ID. You are right about the DMV not really knowing especially if you are just keeping a CDL active and not going to drive.
