Alrighty, Not sure if this is the place for Maintence type issues but.....
Our truck and/or trailer(s) seem to have an air pressure issue, but it is on and off. Been on this truck approx. 3 weeks and we had a sensor inside dash replaced on our very first load. Something inside the dash happened and we were continuously losing air pressure to the point we werent driveable.....4 hours later TA roadside asst. had us moving again.... Not sure if this issue is currently related as we went about one full week without noticing the "new" issue.
Only sometimes, when we stop and shut engine off for extended amount of time, then when we turn engine back on, we have lost all air pressure, soon as the engine is turned on we get the warning buzzer, but it immediately builds up and stays good for our drive time.... then next time we shutdown, the issue may or may not occur... Anyone have a clue as to whats causing this? The first time we noticed the issue I macro'ed our wonderful maintenance dept. without much fanfare, basically was told to keep the load moving if possible and have (insert random truck stop repair shop here) call before any NECESSARY repairs are made. Well in our young budding minds of infinte wisdom and out of sheer brokeness, we just decided to keep the loads moving until the truck wont go or until we are due for our regularly scheduled maint. at Main terminal. We really havent had any serious problems, other than the fact that:
A. wondering if this is an issue that could set us up for an out of service violation/fine/bad standing with the company if we were to get some kind of inspection somewhere
And:
B: Im here to gain some working knowledge of these types of issues so I know whats going on with my equipment, and the ones Im supposed to reach out to havent really clued me in on anything
So if the issue sounds familar or if its a non issue at all please give me some insight, greatly appreciated
My next issue of the night pertains to hours of service and hours of service as a team. As far as getting miles are concerned, Im kind of on an ego trip currently 2 straight weeks hovering around 7800 miles each week seems pretty decent for the current times and considering how many of my own company trucks I see sitting around as I swoop through the islands for my fuel and go's. The truck is(was) constantly moving there for 2 straight weeks without the opportunity for both of us to even really sit and chill together. Which means we are getting along like best friends, we aren't getting showers often, we are having delsusions of grandjeur, and for the amount of $$$ we are actually getting paid per mile we arent complaining about our paychecks......... Anyways, lol
We are in a position where we are literally running out of hours each and every day at least for the last 2 days. We have had to shutdown the truck for 6-8 hours both days. We knew we were running short on hours when we dropped Friday about 70 miles north of Portland, we requested from FM 34 hr restart... and we were denied(not that either of us minded another 2800 mile load)... He handed us a load that goes to southern NY... We are tight, as Im typing this we are outside Gary,Ind.. Load drops at 11pm tomorrow night and we are going to lose another hour for EST and face another mandatory service hour shutdown as well. Can we make it there? YES, if the stars are aligned, we should be able to run until approx 8pm EST Monday and that should give us enough time to get her there sometime within 2 hours of the shutdown.....
The dilemma is this.. We'd like a 34 hr restart just for the fact that we dont want to have to do these mandatory shutdowns every day, we are supposedly this expedited company and it makes me personally nervous to think that a load might be late because we are literally out of hours, Im not sure how the company, just dont want to feel as though its our(the drivers') fault for a late load, when we know #### well our situation. We macro every morning our available hours, its glaringly obvious we dont have many, we phone dispatch to keep giving them updates.. They just seem unconcerned.... until a load is late probably... Maybe Im just frickin paranoid who knows, lol...
Anyways, if it came down to it, at a larger type company like so, what seems to be the more important deal? Tossing the log books out the window and pushing the load on time or letting the load be late? Which would get us "punished," the least? My paranoia stems from all the horror stories Ive heard about new guys running late on loads here, then getting slammed with a whopping 400-1000 miles a week, making no money for several months, and having to sit at truck stops for days on end....
I haven't had to go through much of that since I was in training, and I dont want to... But here we are in the middle of this. Maybe we get our restart once this load drops, not that we even want one, When I was in training I went through a way to basically get a 34 hr restart without even really necessarily stopping basically one guy runs 2 shifts time/load permitting, the other guy gets his restart, then vice versa.... We havent had that luxury here, we are also both new, we did have one opportunity where at least one of us COULD have gotten it, but because of our green color we overlooked it. definitely learned from it. Just looking for others advice here, getting into a situation where either safety dept. or FM/load dept. could come down on us, would like to avoid that if possible and keep the sailing as smooth as its been. We're literally working our ##### off, I can handle the abuse, I need the money, sometimes gotta lite the fire under codrivers butt he seems to not have the same concern as I do for the ontime delivery and he's more nonchalant, its all good though between us... They wanna try to burn me out because Im making company minimum, I can outlast them, need to outsmart them too, get around safety dept/hours problem so they can't toss me out on my ### because I made a mistake in my responsibilities by running over legal hours. I believe we've done enough to cover our ### in that event..... but we shall see

Not sure what kind of leak you had, if current one is intermittent, I would say it is probably in the HVAC controls or the gearshift.
With the engine off and the key on, try the range shifter and the splitter if you have a transmission with more than 10 gears, also try switching from AC to vent to defrost with the selector, sometimes those cause air to leak quickly, too.
I have seen both of these things but it could be something else.Crazyeyes Thanks this. -
Had a simular leaking problem on my freightshaker. Turned out to be a bad valve affecting the secondary air system (seats, Cab bags and worst of all, Drop Axle!). When the engine was running, all was well, but slow leak when shut down. I'd keep a sharp eye on pressure drop and hit the shop as soon as you can. I relatively new myself, but since air runs my brakes, I don't believe in the mythical "minor air leak".
HOS... be careful with those logbooks. Nothing is so bad as being held at a weigh station. Or being made to wait at a terminal for a "logbook class". Lot's of DM's and Planners will run you out of hours, get you in trouble, then say it's your fault that you gave into their pressure. In fairness, they are running books for 20-50 drivers.....
Best of luck, and stay safe......Crazyeyes Thanks this. -
Thanks guys,
we are headed to terminal as we also have QC issue, so gonna get those things checked tomorrow.
really appreciate the insight into HoS. I understand that its my responsibilty to keep myself legal....... or is it.... lol
.
That's just how they play you. Im hungry and full of energy, I wont leave any miles for another truck or for another driver, regardless of whats allowed within the law. Obviously, the company will cut me loose for gross negligence and I suppose that's fair, so I see must play within their rules. Just wondering at what point safety is going to slap my wrist with a ruler. Definitely dont want a logbook class.
And exactly what I should say to them, and it sounds like blaming the FM wont fly.
Thanks again for the insight -
actually, air releases your brakes, springs run them..
when I ran team, we ran 10 on and 10 off so at the most we were only down for 4 hours at a time. you guys should never log on at the same time, so you should'nt run out....technically speaking..
