Hey all,
I am about to take my Class C Permit test [waiting for my birth certificate in the mail], and then go to a driving school to finish off to get my regular [class C] driver's license. I spent most of my life working in social services, the pay was low and I usually just took public transit. I was a passenger OTR with a friend to get a taste of the lifestyle. I'd like to be able to have higher income potential, run my own show, and see more of the USA. I'm in my 30s, and I finally want to move up the totem pole.
Anyway, how likely is it that a CDL-A driving school will accept a person who is also a brand new Class C driver? Has anyone done this and have any information? I'm in Michigan, I don't have any family [they have all passed on], no significant other, so I am not tied to any particular location.
I am hoping to get funding through Michigan Works or something similar. If anyone has any ideas on schools in my area that will accept folks that are new to all kinds of driving, let me know. I have a clean background [I needed FBI and child abuse clearances for all past employment, so I am not worried about that] and I can pass a drug test.
I am more familiar with the lifestyle of trucking, I by no means know even close to enough, but I can hook and unhook a trailer pretty quickly. I have been studying the CDL-A manual, practice tests, reading, etc, after I started passing the practice tests for class c license at 100%.
I feel like it's a good thing because I don't have any "bad habits" so to speak. But, I am not sure if there are strict requirements on how long you need to have a Class C before you can move on to Class A, and that's what I am struggling to find info on.
Thanks for the help!

Some companies want a year with Class-C, but I've read that a few will go with 6 mos. Class-C.
Don't have a list of those, but maybe the cdl schools in your area do.
You might drive a non-cdl truck until you have the experience with Class-C to move up to Class-A. -
Thank you! Good idea. I appreciate the idea, I am going to look into that!

Right in my neighborhood... I’d walk into trainco. It’s in Taylor, they don’t usually have that many students plus the instructors give you plenty of seat time. When you get good they test you , kick the truck outta gear, long intense conversations. But the address is
22299 Eureka Rd, Taylor, MI 48180
The least you can do is walk in and have a conversation with them to figure out where you stand. They might be able to get you a grant for the schoolChinatown Thanks this.
