How to move a truck without authority

My luck 10,000 would get away with it id be the 1 they would grab me pulling out of the lot haha

 

Well over here on the East Coast I have done it in several states. Local police, state police could care less as long as you drive respectively. If you want to better your chances do it on the weekend, DOT doesn't work on the weekend

 

Sometimes it can be a bit scary looking at these questions. This one is a bit weird. I was asked by a guy just Saturday afternoon if I know a reliable transporter that would move 5 tractors he has bought from a place near me. Trust me, sometimes it's just best to hire it done if you have never done this kind of stuff before. Across town, or maybe under 200 miles, I would not worry about it. Across several states doing something like this during a special DOT or that yearly CVSA thing might not be a great idea!

I just go by the old saw, if you don't know what you are doing get someone that does to do it!

 

Oh 100% if it was a state to state move id most likely farm it out to an experienced party. This would be about 90 miles

 

In PA, all I did was stick "not for hire" signs on the door and get temp insurance. Drove from the dealership to home, drove it from home to a shop to get the governor removed then drove it back home, drove from home to a company in chicago to work, drove it back home later on when I quit that company, drove it to a place to pick up a trailer that I bought.

 

On a more serious note...

I bought a used truck from a dealership in Iowa and they arranged an in-transit permit to get me to the border.

 

We've had several containers and chassis stolen, caught one on camera late on a Friday night but no plate visible. About Two hours later [we found out when the chassis supplier forwarded the E Z Pass violation from their license plate] crossed the Del Memorial Bridge.

One older chassis [40'] with a newer 20 decked on top after changing out 8 new ties and rims for 4 junkers and without chains, was dropped on Sunday morning at 9am in the parking lot of a local flea market in New Castle, DE.

"a red tractor, no signs and nobody was close enough to get the license plate"

Since these were empty containers the cargo theft unit isn't all over it. Someone has a location, probably in an old industrial building with some sort of crane to be able to lift the containers off and deck the 20...

We've been reporting this to the PD and they say they are passing it along...

If these guys can do it, almost anybody can!

 

Get your DOT number takes 5 minutes, it's free, don't need insurance to get numbers. Get insurance. Keep the bill of sale in the truck along with documentation. Drive like you have good sense.

 

I faced the same dilemma a couple years ago when I bought my truck from a private party.

I obtained non trucking insurance from progressive and ran with a bill of sale no plates.

Drove 150 miles but no weigh stations on route.
