Hello everyone...
At the risk of sounding redundant I apologize in advance for any questions that have already been asked a million times by new members of the board. I have read through lots of threads, but the board is so massive there is no way I could read everything.
That being said... My husband really wants to get into truck driving. He is a residential construction plumber by trade but as you all know, the state of our country's economy has been terrible and he's been without work since last December. He is an excellent driver, never a ticket or accident, he doesn't drink, smoke or use drugs and he works harder than the average guy. I have been supporting us and now my business is not doing well so after long discussions we decided that trucking seems to be the way to go for him.
You might ask why I'm in here asking all the questions instead of him...Well I'm the inquizitive one in the relationship where my husband is a tad on the gullible side.He is sweet but easily influenced in the wrong direction. I have been doing a lot of research on these trucking companies and am completely turned off by Werner and Swift especially.
We live in Arizona and really there are only 2 options out here for schools...Southwest and AIT. The thing that really turns us off about these places is when you call up and ask for information they refuse to give any info over the phone. They want you to come in person and meet with them so they can shove a contract down your throat and they only hire out to Swift and Werner. I have heard all kinds of crap about both those places that make me apprehensive about him going to either of them. Granted, I realize there are unhappy people wherever you go and we are trying to take that into consideration as well.
After searching through your forum it seems that Central Refrigerated is a good company to go with...However I could have missed some threads regarding how awful they are I just don't know.
My question is... To those who have worked for CRSI, does it matter if my husband gets his permit in AZ or does he have to get his permit and reg CDL license in Utah? Also...I know CRSI hires out of AZ but since they don't have an actual location here in AZ; will that affect the amount of home time my husband has?
Last question and most obvious...
What do you guys recommend for a company to start with? Who trains and is actually halfway decent? I realize every newbie is going to have it a little rough, he won't be making a killing the first couple of years on the road...But as I mentioned above...My husband is a bit on the gullible side and I don't want him going somewhere that is just going to completely screw him over either.
Any input would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!!!
I'm a newbie to the board with a few questions... :)

Hello Aurora and welcome to the forum...
Since you do live in AZ, why not consider Swift? They have their own school, and do a decent job getting newbies their license.
Check out Texas-Nana's page, she and her husband both went through the Phoenix academy, both are still driving for Swift. Keep in mind that Central Refrigerated is also owned by the Swift family. Plus where you live would be excellent future dedicated fleet for your husband with the fleet right there in Casa Grand, terminal at the Wal Mart DC...you might even check with the terminal manager at the DC about Swift. Also, no hassle about getting the permit outside of AZ, then having to pay more to change to an AZ license from the UT time.
Ask Baack to help you send a PM to Texas-Nana, since your post count is too low to send one to her yourself.
Good luck to you two! -
Thanks for the prompt reply.
We did call swift today and they said that my husband would have to go through AIT in Phoenix. I have heard that swift has the lowest rate of pay. A friend of ours in FL just got hired by them and is only starting out after training at .21 cents per mile. On CRSI's site they say they start you out at .28 cents per mile and after 6 months it goes up.
I wasn't aware they were owned by swift. Why do they have such a bad wrap? lol.
Thanks again.

Swift has always been the brunt of everybodies jokes..when I started driving for them way back when, we were governed at 57mph...TX was really ugly at that speed...but since they are a training company, and will hire anything breathing and/or walking they get most of the "don't give a ####" types just looking to extend the unemployment benefits...long story actually.
28cpm sounds a bit high for a rookie...but I don't know for real fact...and the 21cpm with Swift will increase every 30 days if I remember right (been a while since I was there at Swift)
The best advice I can give you is to try to get in touch with Texas-Nana...she will give you an honest answer to any question, and as I said before...Baack can help you get in touch with her. -
Why doesn't he just go to this school in Tucscon: http://www.pima.edu/program/truck-driving/ Community colleges are the only way to go in my opinion.
Swift is garbage in my opinion, but it seems like everyone isn't paying much at the present time so maybe it really isn't that bad? I've heard that Swift is pretty accomodating to work for although they don't pay that well.halfburn Thanks this. -
CRST is team only, at least for newbies and most others, too, for that matter. If he can't find a suitable driver to team with in a certain amount of time, he will be fired with cause and you will owe them money if you have signed their contract.
Log out and log back in, on the first screen that comes up, scroll down to the third group, the inside scoop, click on any company you are looking into on the company DAC report and get a listing of threads relating to that company. An alternative is to click on the the first title at the top of the scree Truckers' Trucking Forum | Largest Class A Messa.ge Board, that will also bring up the homepageLast edited: Oct 2, 2009

CRST or CRSI? Are they the same? -
Not even related, but you are using unknown initials...don't refer to Central Ref with only the initials..people will see CRST if not looking close.
CRST=Cedar Rapids Steel Transport, out of Cedar Rapids, they have fuggly gold trucks!
In the future use ---Central Ref---everyone will know what you are inquiring about.
Also..go to the bottom of this page and where it says Forum Jump, hit the drop down arrow and pick companies from the list..there you can see different topics about or from that company. Also try the groups..."Report a bad company" and the other side "Report a Good Company".
Good luck again! -
Thank you again! I'm looking right now.
