No need to apologize. You spoke the truth. Finding and keeping good drivers gets harder every year. I don't see that changing any time soon.
We're lucky in that our drivers stay with us, usually until they retire. Our turnover is low enough that we can start looking for another driver without having to take the first person with a CDL and a pulse that figures out how to get the front door open.
Our youngest driver is in his middle forties. The other guys call him "the kid".
We've had to hire a couple of seasonal drivers this year to drive water trucks on the fires but they're working out pretty good. On the seasonal work there are some of the retirees that like to work a little during the year and we already know them and trust them.
On the other hand, we lease out part of our yard to a couple of megas that use it for a drop yard. Watching some of those drivers makes me appreciate the ones I have. The majority of them prove your point. I could write volumes about what I've seen them do but it's the same stuff you read about on TTR every day.
Must have tools/parts you keep on your truck?

I've actually backed mine down some. But normally can get myself out of a jam. Being a mechanic before driving, I carried way to much stuff. Don't carry a spare tire anymore. But carry jack and tools to single one out. If I really need a tire, I can pay to have it delivered. Or bribe a buddy to bring me one from my shop. Worst case scenario the Mrs. Will have to bring Ol Henery to me.
Not a Ford guy, or diesel pickup guy. But hands down the best 5 grand piece of junk I have ever bought.spsauerland, Brettj3876, tommymonza and 1 other person Thank this. -
carry brake chamber, air gov, couple pancakes, assortment of air fittings, teo spare tires and tools to change them myself, more dang tools than I need, assortment of spare airlines, lights, wheel seals and wheel bearings for all positions. I havent seen the inside of a shop on the road in many years.

Yeah ive been been stopped by DOT before for a couple small things that shut me down. Told me that a qualified mechanic had to fix. My truck, my company, I do my own repairs. Fixed what I had to and left 5 minutes later. Told him he could arrest me if he wanted too.
Unfortunately I have a pretty small tool box on my truck. I think its only 3 feet wide, holds most of my strap stuff. Thinking about installing a tool box on my headache rack to carry more stuff.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I put this on last summer, it’s a generator box, I found on Craigslist. It’s held on with 2 - 3x1 channels, that also support the bottom. Id like to get an in frame/ catwalk box to match. I had planned on a p/u box, from Tractor Supply, I’m heavy on the Drives now sometimes, can’t get the fifth wheel all the way forward. But it’s rare. A little modification to the headache rack, maybe some aluminum channel or angle, and a nice shelf for a p/u tool box would work.

This the original one I had planned. They have them 4’ and 6’ long. Along with all different types of steel and aluminum boxes. The aluminums aren’t very strong, like the expensive boxes. But if the bottoms supported with a good bracket, they’re fine. For $300, hard to beat. I see a lot of these on semis.
