One of my Grandfathers brothers was a waist gunner on a B-17. He was shot down toward the end of the war and became a POW. As the allies began nearing the Rhine he amd other POWs from his stalag were forced to march to other stalags...
He figured it out once that he was forced to march nearly 500 miles, those that couldn't or wouldnt march were shot and left beside the road. Then one morning he awoke to find all the germans were gone... A short time later they were met by the allied forces.
In total 5 of my Grandfathers brothers served in WWII... One of them was in the Marines and fought on Tinian, Pelilu, Tarowa, Iwo Jima, and Okanowa. Miraculously all 5 made it home without a single major injury.
