I have started to shop around for a company to sign up with as a newbie without a CDL . Have made some calls and done the research on this and other forums. Thought I was OK when I see the requirements listed. But two issues have arisen:
First, in 1990, was arrested for DUI but convicted of Reckless Driving while on vacation in another state. During this incident I refused the alcohol test and received a notice from that state that my privilege to drive in that state would be suspended one year. No action was taken by my home state. Well last year, the state I vacationed in became my home state. Turned in my DL and was given new one, no problem. While applying for a trucking job, found out my license in my new state was suspended for 14 years rather than one because I did not pay a restoration fee and was not cleared until I applied for a license in that state. (Didn't know I would have to pay a restoration fee thinking that is only necessary to get an actual DL back.) How much of a problem will this type of administrative suspension be when applying for jobs?
Second, I did not know about all this until the recruiter for a company told me all this and basically told me I was disqualified by his company because I refused an alcohol test. Do the better companies automatically bar someone who refused the test no matter how much time has passed?
One company school has called me in to start training, but it is not one too many people in these forums have many good things to say about.
Would hate to get in this business only to find out I am permanently banished to the lower paying companies.
Any info or advice on these subjects would be appreciated.

I'm also in the same boat, so to speak, due to a mispent youth my driving record is somewhat less then perfect. There is a terrible shortage of drivers right now though (In Canada anyway) so it isn't hard to get a driving job. Most of the Class 1 drivers are in Alberta working in the oil field (that is where I am right now) so in other parts of the country you can get anything you want pretty much. However the oil field is starting to slow down, which is why I just got another job driving back in my home province. They don't pay to well but with my inexperiance and terrible driving record I can't really afford to be selective. I would just do as I am and stick it out a lower paying company until you have some experiance and your driving record will only improve with time if you don't do anything stupid.

You will more than likely be able to get a job , maybe after a period of time (read a few years) a good one. But there will be some of the "best companies" that will never hire you , simply because some companies will not accept a DUI ever. As far as a limited choice of jobs...yes to start with you'll be facing that. Wow I just looked at how old this thread is.....wow!

That post is from 2006; he's probably retired by now.
