did chester pass? when I was in school (2004) the CRE recruiter came. she said that he was in his 80s and still drove occasionally. it was very comforting to think that an 80+ year old man might be out there some where, driving a 40 ton tractor trailer.

 

Yeah i feel bad for these guys. I just saw a couple this week who were in brand new Cascadia's for CRE. I'm watching this one guy walk around and pull out his hair almost. His lease truck didnt even have a single bug on it...it was that new. All I could think of was how bad he got bent over and how many miles does he have to turn to make any money...Wow, just crazy.

 

To me anyway, it seems like the people who have the most to lose, get pulled into these leases. People who are behind on their mortgage, trashed credit, have car payments, credit cards maxed out, etc. They don't think of it as a business, they see the bright lights, and the shiny truck, and the promise of $$$, and quickly sign on the dotted line. And companies like CRE do nothing to discourage them.

If they did any homework, they would see that buying a truck from a dealer or an individual is a far better way to get into the business. That way, if it doesn't work out with one company, you can take your toys, and leave.

 

Ive seen a couple of divorices also cause of the stress and headaches associated with such. Two of them right off the cuff I remember, had VERY lousy cpa's that mismanaged their funds. Many drivers DONT have cpa's and get thru it....no sweat. We all think we're good at math, just so we dont have to add.

Just to clarify: I believe Chester R. England (the original) passed away some time ago...late 80's I want to say. There was also a son, Rodney, who passed away in his 40s from a chronic illness.

I believe it may have been Gene England who would still pull the occasional load (I had a cup of coffee with the company in '96). I remember he had a white Freightliner.

 

I went through CRE in 2000 and this is about right. Just about everybody I met was broke and needed to get on the road quick to get that advance. Luckily I heard rumors about the lease deal so didn't get into it. Then I left after 90 days.
