Yes, I talked to Rick Dutra also. I have considered RCC as well. I first have to find out if I can get a clean "bill of health". I have a pacemaker that has never stopped me so far but I have heard some negative feedback. I still want to drive truck. I think I am just preparing myself in case I don't get to follow through because of health reasons. Also, I admit to being concerned about whether or not I could actually get hired on. I am 56 afterall and I am sure there are plenty of young'ins out there that can run circles around me:biggrin_2552:

dont worry about people running circles around you. I have seen and talked to quite a few people that are getting into trucking at age 50+. my trainer had a student a few months before me that was in his early 60's. So, I know it can be done...

I went to truck driving school in Redding, CA and Rick was recruiting for Gordon , 4 years ago. I had a couple classmates go to Gordon, and were happy but I know of one that has since left, he said he couldnt get enough miles. Now he drives for Aggressive Transport out of Red Bluff and is quite happy.

I don't want to break your heart (no pun intended.....well maybe), but I believe have'n a machine planted in your chest to restart your most important organ (equal to the brain), does disqualify you from passing a D.O.T. required physical.

    I could be wrong.

This isn't like medication to regulate a high or low blood preasure (which will in SOME cases make you eligable for a 3 month, 6 month or one year certification)-----this is a defibulator, designed to electricute your heart back into motion.

If it DOESN'T disqualify....in my opinion; it should. Only because it makes your heart unpredictable.

    Good luck though.

It doesn't disqualify me, I found out yesterday and had a complete going over by the Cardio. As far as "it should disqualify me" I think you would really have to know all about the details of my heart before you make that decision. But it is your opinion which of course you are welcome to. More of my opinion though, is that I could be in better shape than someone without a pacemaker. There is no predicting what will happen to anyone, inside or outside their body.

This may or may not be of interest to you but here tis:
Coronary artery bypass surgery and pacemaker implantation are remedial procedures and thus not unqualifying. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators are disqualifying due to risk of syncope. Coumadin is a medical treatment which can improve the health and safety of the driver and should not, by its use, medically disqualify the commercial driver. The emphasis should be on the underlying medical condition(s) which require treatment and the general health of the driver. FMCSA should be contacted at (202) 366-1790 for additional recommendations regarding the physical qualification of drivers on coumadin.
(See Cardiovascular Advisory Panel Guidelines for the Medical Examination of Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers at: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rulesregs/medreports.htm)

Mine is not a difibullator. Just one more thing I wanted to say is this. I have concern for other's on the road as well as myself. If I feel there is any reason I could be a danger to other people on the highway I would remove myself way before anyone else had to. I have come to understand that money and my wishes come second to the importance of other's. I admire you for saying what is on your mind and for stating your beliefs about folks with pacemakers. I have to say I hope that I don't run into someone that looks at it like you when I am trying to get my foot in the door of a company though:biggrin_2553::biggrin_2559:

Well; I'm happy for you. That is why I said:
I WILL however; have to say that I am disappointed in the system. I hope you understand......but they are coming out with legislation (if it's not out all ready in Minnesota I think), that states, if your NECK is larger than some certain standard (even if your healthy in every way), you are considered obese, and a candidate for (if not diagnosed with) sleep appniea(sp.) and IMMEDIATELY disqualified.

I think a machine that keeps your heart in check is much worse.

I think a man made device that is designed to jump start a vital organ that Doctors must have 100% certanty is gonna stop at one point in time....inserted surgically inside a human body, is far, far more of an issue than if someone freak'n snores.

Yes.....happy for you.....disappointed in the system.

p.s.- No, I do not now, nor have I ever had an issue personally with sleep appniea or obesity. Just using that one as an example.

with the foods we eat in this country, air we breath and water we drink, not to mention some of our vices like smoking, drinking alcohol, doing drugs, prescribed or otherwise, who is more likely to have a problem behind the wheel of any vehicle? Me because I have an implant that works on a battery or someone else?

The system you are in favor of, evidently, would disqualify anyone who is not perfect. And here's the deal, no one is and no one will ever be without flaw. So I wonder where it is you, if you were in charge, would draw the line?

And by the way, while you are out and out disqualifying someone like me from driving don't tell me "good luck" or "you are happy for me" because if you were you would be blatantly contradicting yourself. I hope you understand why I would say that.

I do understand why you'd say that. Because you are no different than anybody else in this country. You are thinking of YOU.

No matter how you word it, or how you want to spin it; you are thinking of YOU. I get it.

I gave you an example of what is disqualifying perfectley healthy people.....and you skirted right past it......and went right back to YOU.

Though you are more mature than most newbies.....you still have the same mind set.
You have stars in your eyes......visions of traveling this country and getting paid for it......visions of a perfect life.
The only difference is, with you, it is most likely a mid-life crisis----and other newbies are just plain naive.

You are 50% right....and 50% wrong. I do wish you good luck....because I'm not a monster and wish ill will on you. But; you are right....I am NOT happy for you....nor am I happy for the possibility that you stand a greater chance than someone with a healthy heart, of having your heart stop while navigating an 80,000 lb. vehicle down the road and not being able to control it or get it stopped....and killing my wife and/or kids.

Nope; gotta tell you.....that thought scares the hell out of me.

But hey.....it's all about YOUR happiness.....YOUR dreams and goals at mid-life, now isn't it?!?
