Fooling my self not. You can't just roll a self driving truck into a TA to get fixed . This is some hi tech expensive #### we are talking about . Most of these companies have went belly up trying to get the self driving truck up and running . The wages they pay drivers now is already peanuts with how low rates are . If shippers know that trucks don't need a rate to cover driver labor, boom rates are now going to be worth a cut of grass. Then poof there goes the driver shortage because hell all you need to do is buy a truck and it's ready to roll anytime any day . Bang there goes rates again because there's no demand just supply . Self driving trucks would destroy the transportation industry from every body from the janitor at loves to the big wig at ch robinson. It's not realistic and it's not something that can be pulled off without an act of congress . Go look at what happened to starsky.

dont worry if you dont have a job you can still sit home and order stuff off of amazon while you collect your universal income, kinda like people today living off of welfare and credit cards. the extreme debt with high interest will offset any losses for the super wealthy.

Eldiablo Thanks this. -
Are automated trucks coming? Absolutely they are.
Will any of us live long enough to see it happen? Probably not.
I think a young guy starting out in this business could still have a good career. There are so many variables in trucking that an over-all automated system that does away with drivers entirely isn't even on the horizon.
Think "Wright Brothers"...that's about where we are in developing technology.nredfor88, olddog_newtricks, snowman1980 and 1 other person Thank this. -
This keeps coming up, will truck driving jobs come to an end. Yes, but so will many other industries. Will it happen anytime soon?, nope. Is there anything we can do to stop it?, nope. So why worry about it.
If I am still alive when the day comes when my company routes me back to the yard because HAL is ready to take over, I will just go find another job. You know, like what all the horse buggy builders had to do when cars were invented. -
Old truckers never die, they just smell like it.
650cat425, snowman1980 and Sirscrapntruckalot Thank this. -
That's true! 18 years in this business and all I see is companies competing for the bottom of the barrel drivers. Automatics, radar guided cruise, gps... The job has changed. And that's sad because I liked when the job was tough, it meant something to be a trucker.

A few years before retirement but glad I haul heavy and into the far north of Canada. Automation is coming but think it will clog I-10 before I see it into Key Lake Mine and beyond.

Automated trucks may sound great from a business standpoint but I'm more concerned about the societal impacts.
Just think, without truck drivers who's going to support the lot lizard's??? -
I'd like to see a self driving truck take an oversize load up through HWY 1 in Jenner California to Fort Bragg.
nredfor88, LameMule and snowman1980 Thank this.
